Product Description
Roses, Picots, & Pearls Snowdrops are the most recent in a long line of “annual snowflakes from Michelle” that everyone on my Christmas list looks forward to each December. Though a little large for putting in Christmas cards, these six elegant Snowdrops, made with size 10 white/pearl or colored metallic crochet cotton, add sparkle to holiday fashions, packages, or décor – or as sun-catchers year round! Each requires between 10 - 13 yards of crochet cotton, and measures approximately 3-1/4” across when finished.
Experimenting with different colors and textures of thread can totally change the look of your ornaments. For the “stained glass look” pictured, I used Universal Yarn Nazli Gelin Garden Metallic Crochet Thread in Red/Red, Green/Green, Royal/Royal, and White/Silver, and Aunt Lydia’s Metallic 10 White/Pearl.
Roses, Picots, & Pearls Snowdrops Crochet Decorations
Project Overview
Roses, Picots, & Pearls Snowdrops is a crochet decoration design created by Michelle Crean for Hook & Web Designs. These delicate ornaments are designed to add sparkle to holiday décor or function as year-round sun catchers. The pattern offers flexibility in color selection, allowing crafters to create variations using different yarn colors while maintaining the elegant snowdrop silhouette.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces decorative snowdrop ornaments suitable for hanging in windows or on holiday trees. The design features dimensional petals and decorative elements that catch light beautifully, making them ideal for both festive seasonal displays and permanent home décor. Each snowdrop can be customized with different color combinations to suit various aesthetic preferences.
Craft & Techniques
This project is worked entirely in crochet, utilizing fine crochet cotton and steel hooks to create delicate, intricate details. The pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to build dimensional structure and visual interest.
- Ring Foundation: The snowdrop begins with a chain ring, a foundational technique for creating circular motifs
- Post Stitches: Front post single crochet stitches are used to work around the posts of previous rounds, creating raised texture and dimensional petals
- Petal Construction: Petals are formed using combinations of single crochet, half double crochet, and chain spaces to create organic, flower-like shapes
- Joining Methods: Slip stitches are used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Front post single crochet (fp sc)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
Materials & Tools
The pattern calls for fine crochet materials to achieve the delicate aesthetic characteristic of snowdrop ornaments.
- Yarn: Size 10 crochet cotton, approximately 10–13 yards per snowdrop. The pattern specifically recommends Aunt Lydia's Metallic 10 White/Pearl for the primary design
- Optional Yarn: Size 10 crochet cotton in additional colors for customization, with suggestions including Universal Yarn Nazli Gelin Garden Metallic Crochet Thread in Red/Red, Green/Green, Royal/Royal, and White/Silver
- Hook: Size 7/1.65 mm steel crochet hook, essential for working with fine thread and creating precise, defined stitches
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the individual stitches are fundamental, the combination of techniques—particularly working post stitches around previous rounds and managing fine thread—requires some crochet experience and familiarity with stitch construction.
Design Details
The snowdrop design progresses through multiple rounds, beginning with a simple ring and expanding outward to create eight-petaled flowers. The use of metallic crochet cotton adds reflective sparkle, making these ornaments particularly effective as sun catchers. The pattern's structure allows for color variation, enabling crafters to create coordinated sets or themed collections using different yarn colors while maintaining consistent construction methods.
