Rosebud Crochet Applique or Bookmark Pattern
What is Being Made
The Rosebud Applique or Bookmark is a versatile crochet design created by Kerri's Crochet that can be used as a decorative applique or functional bookmark. This intermediate-level project features a dimensional rose flower that can be constructed in three different sizes depending on yarn weight and desired finished dimensions. The design offers flexibility in application, making it suitable for embellishing garments, accessories, or serving as a standalone bookmark.
Available Sizes and Finished Dimensions
- Large rose: 18cm x 10cm (7" x 4") when made with 8 ply wool
- Medium rose: 11.5cm x 7cm (4.5" x 2.75") when made with 4 ply crochet cotton
- Small rose: 8cm x 4cm (3" x 1.5") when made with No. 20 crochet cotton
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction begins with a magic loop, a popular method for starting projects in the round without a visible center hole. The pattern utilizes a range of essential crochet stitches to create texture and dimension:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundational stitch used to create the base structure and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): A taller stitch used to build the main body and create the petal formations
- Single crochet (sc): A shorter, tighter stitch employed for shaping and definition
- Half double crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch used for transitional areas and structural support
- Treble crochet (tr): A tall stitch that adds height and flow to certain sections
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and securing stitches without adding height
The pattern construction involves working in rows and rounds, with specific stitch increases and decreases to shape the rose petals. The design requires turning work between rows and managing stitch counts to achieve the dimensional petal effect characteristic of a realistic rosebud.
Materials and Tools Required
The Rosebud pattern calls for specific materials to achieve optimal results:
- Yarn: The pattern uses 4 ply crochet cotton in multiple colors—specifically two shades of red for the rose petals and green for accents or leaves. Alternative yarn weights are accommodated; the pattern notes that 8 ply wool produces a larger finished rose, while No. 20 crochet cotton creates a smaller, more delicate version
- Crochet hook: A 1.25mm hook is recommended for the 4 ply crochet cotton version, though hook size will adjust based on yarn weight selection
- Finishing tools: A darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and a sewing needle with sewing thread for stitching the rose components together
- Scissors: For cutting yarn
Pattern Structure and Construction Method
The Rosebud pattern is organized by component, with the front petal serving as the starting point. The pattern begins by creating a magic loop with bright red yarn, then works foundation rows using chain and double crochet stitches to establish the petal base. Rows are turned to create shaping, and stitch counts are increased strategically to form the curved, organic shape of a rose petal. The pattern instructions use standard crochet abbreviations throughout, making it accessible to intermediate crocheters familiar with standard terminology.
Assembly involves stitching multiple crocheted components together using sewing thread and a sewing needle, allowing crafters to layer and shape the petals into a realistic three-dimensional rose form. This hybrid approach—combining crochet construction with traditional sewing assembly—creates a polished, professional-looking finished piece.
Skill Level and Suitability
Classified as an intermediate project, the Rosebud Applique or Bookmark requires foundational crochet knowledge including comfort with multiple stitch types, row and round construction, and basic shaping techniques. The pattern's versatility in sizing and application makes it suitable for crafters looking to expand their skills while creating a practical or decorative item. A video tutorial is available on Ker
