River Birch Walk Blanket Scarf Shawl by MaDonna Marie

Project Overview

River Birch Walk is an intermediate-level knitted blanket scarf shawl designed by MaDonna Marie in 2020. This project captures the natural beauty of river birch trees through colorwork and textural contrast. The right side of the shawl features a scenic depiction of a walk alongside majestic birch trees, while the wrong side showcases the characteristic peeling bark texture of these trees. The finished piece measures approximately 16 inches by 78 inches when blocked, making it a versatile accessory suitable for all-season wear with luxurious coziness.

Yarn and Materials

This shawl is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn, offering structure and drape appropriate for a blanket-scale accessory. Crafters have two yarn options:

  • Woolfolk Far (142 yards per 130 meters per skein): 5 skeins total using colors 20, 19, and 18 in a multi-color combination
  • Malabrigo in sweet grape colorway (210 yards per 190 meters per skein): 4 skeins

The pattern notes that final measurements may vary depending on the specific yarn chosen. The recommended needles are 5.5mm US 9, and the gauge is set at 20 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured on the blocked fabric.

Techniques and Stitches

River Birch Walk employs colorwork knitting as its primary technique, incorporating multiple contrast colors to create the visual narrative of the birch tree landscape. The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches, which are combined to build both the pictorial elements and textural details.

The construction involves strategic color placement, with crafters choosing which colors will serve as main color (MC), contrast color 1 (CC1), and contrast color 2 (CC2) before casting on. This flexibility allows for personalized color combinations while maintaining the design integrity. The pattern utilizes slip stitches as part of the colorwork technique, enabling smooth transitions between color sections.

Pattern Tools and Notations

Essential notions for completing this project include a cable needle for managing stitches during colorwork transitions, 2 to 7 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and design sections, and a large eye blunt needle for weaving in ends and finishing. A row counter is recommended to track progress through the pattern repeats. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations: k for knit, p for purl, rpt for repeat, slp for slip, and x's to denote repeat multipliers.

Skill Level and Construction

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, River Birch Walk requires competency with basic knitting stitches and comfort working with colorwork techniques. The blanket scarf format—combining the generous dimensions of a shawl with the wearability of a scarf—makes this an ambitious yet achievable project for knitters ready to advance beyond beginner patterns. The colorwork elements and multi-skein yardage requirements demand attention to pattern detail and color management throughout the knitting process.
