Rill Scarf by Teresa Gregorio
What is Being Made
Rill is a quick-to-knit scarf designed as a practical solution for using up leftover yarn. This beginner-friendly project features a built-in fastening loop that allows the scarf to be secured around the neck without requiring additional closures. The finished piece provides warmth and comfort even in windy conditions, making it both functional and stylish for everyday wear.
Knitting Techniques
The Rill scarf employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses garter stitch as the primary fabric structure, created by knitting every row to produce a textured, reversible surface. Strategic increases are worked at regular intervals to gradually expand the piece from its initial cast-on width. The pattern incorporates cast-offs and cast-ons within the body of the work to create the built-in fastening loop—a clever design feature that eliminates the need for buttons or ties. The backwards loop cast-on method is used when reopening stitches after the cast-off gap, providing a seamless transition in the loop construction.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch used throughout the entire scarf to build the garter stitch fabric
- Increase (inc.): Worked strategically on specific rows to gradually shape the scarf width
- Cast off (CO): Used to close off stitches and create the opening for the fastening loop
- Cast on: Used to reopen stitches after the cast-off gap using the backwards loop method
Materials
The Rill scarf is designed to work with super chunky weight yarn, specifically Handmaiden 12 ply Cashmere in the original design. The pattern requires approximately 50 metres of yarn, making it an ideal one-skein project. Knitting is worked on 9.5 mm needles, which are appropriately sized for the super chunky yarn weight. The gauge is 3 stitches per 1 inch, reflecting the large stitch size created by the chunky yarn and needle combination.
