Riley Blake High Flying Adventure Quilt Pattern – Free Downloadable PDF

The High Flying Adventure quilt pattern by Greatest Adventure is a free downloadable PDF designed for beginner quilters who want to create a bold, adventure-themed patchwork quilt. Using fabrics from the Riley Blake Designs fabric collection, this pattern produces a finished quilt measuring 64" x 79" — a generous throw or lap quilt size that works beautifully as a children's quilt, a camping-inspired bedroom accent, or a cozy everyday blanket.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a patchwork throw quilt built around the classic Flying Geese block, one of the most recognizable and beloved units in traditional quilting. The Flying Geese blocks are arranged in vertical columns separated by long sashing strips, creating a structured, graphic layout with strong directional movement. The finished Flying Geese unit size is 3" x 6", giving the quilt a crisp, well-proportioned look. The overall design is lively and colorful, drawing on adventure, camping, maps, and arrow motifs printed directly into the Riley Blake fabric collection.

Techniques Used

  • Flying Geese construction – the primary block unit of the quilt, each made from a rectangle paired with corner squares sewn at angles to create the signature triangular "geese" shape
  • Strip cutting and sub-cutting – fabric is cut into width-of-fabric (WOF) strips and then sub-cut into rectangles and squares for efficient, accurate piecing
  • Sashing – long vertical sashing strips made from the Green Arrows fabric (C5145 Green) separate the Flying Geese columns, with strips pieced end-to-end and cut to a finished length of 63½"
  • Borders – a Border 1 is cut from the Multi Arrows fabric using 2½" x WOF strips, framing the quilt center
  • Right-sides-together piecing – all seams are sewn with right sides together following standard quilting convention
  • Binding – the quilt is finished with a traditional binding cut from 5/8 yard of binding fabric

Stitches and Sewing Methods

This is a machine-sewn quilting project using a consistent ¼" seam allowance throughout, which is the standard seam allowance for patchwork quilting. Accurate ¼" seams are especially important when constructing Flying Geese units, as small variations can affect how points align across the quilt. The pattern notes that seam allowances may vary for sashing and border pieces, so quilters are instructed to measure through the center of the quilt before cutting those pieces — a best practice that helps prevent wavy borders and ensures a flat, square finish.
