Block Construction and Techniques Used

Each Crazy Block is assembled from a combination of smaller patchwork units. Understanding how these units are made is key to successfully completing the project.

Half Square Triangles (HSTs)

A central technique in this pattern is the construction of Half Square Triangles. To make them, a line is drawn from corner to corner on the wrong side of an assorted print 3" square. This square is then placed right sides together with an off-white solid 3" square. The quilter sews ¼" on each side of the drawn line, then cuts along the line to yield 2 Half Square Triangles from each pair of squares. These are pressed open and then squared up to 2½". This two-at-a-time HST method is a classic and efficient quilting technique that ensures consistent results. Each Crazy Block requires 4 Half Square Triangles.

Unit A

Once the Half Square Triangles are made, they are combined with additional cut squares to form Unit A. Each Unit A consists of 2 Half Square Triangles, 1 assorted print 2½" square, and 1 off-white solid 2½" square, all sewn together according to the Unit A Diagram provided in the pattern. Two Unit A's are made per Crazy Block.

Four-Patch Units
