Riley Blake Cabin Fever Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern by Lori Whitlock

The Riley Blake Cabin Fever pattern, designed by Lori Whitlock and available as a free downloadable PDF, guides quilters through the construction of a cozy, cabin-inspired throw quilt. The finished quilt measures 61" x 70", making it an ideal lap or throw size perfect for cool-weather decorating. This is an intermediate-level quilting project that assumes a basic knowledge of quilting technique and terminology, making it well-suited for quilters who have moved beyond beginner basics and are ready to work with multiple fabrics and precise piecing.

About the Cabin Fever Quilt Design

The Cabin Fever quilt is built around a single repeating block known as the Cabin Fever Block, which finishes at 9" x 9". The overall quilt center is assembled from 30 Cabin Fever Blocks arranged according to the quilt photo for intentional fabric placement. The design draws on classic quilting traditions with a rustic, woodland aesthetic, featuring prints inspired by pine trees, pine cones, berries, plaid, and wood grain — all hallmarks of a cozy cabin or lodge style.

Block Construction and Techniques

Each Cabin Fever Block is pieced from a combination of squares and Half Square Triangles (HSTs), one of the most foundational and versatile units in quilting. To construct the HSTs, quilters draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of cream shade 4" squares, layer them with moss shade 4" squares right sides together, and sew ¼" on each side of the drawn line. The units are then cut on the line to yield two HSTs per pair. A total of 120 Half Square Triangles are made this way, and each is pressed and squared up to 3½" for consistent, accurate piecing.

Each individual Cabin Fever Block is assembled from:

  • 2 cream shade 3½" squares
  • 4 Half Square Triangles (3½" squared up)
  • 3 assorted print 3½" squares from the decorative Riley Blake fabrics

All seam allowances throughout the pattern are ¼", and all pieces are sewn with right sides together unless otherwise noted. Quilters are advised to read all instructions before cutting, as seam allowances may vary and border pieces should be measured through the center of the quilt before cutting.

Techniques Used

  • Half Square Triangle (HST) construction – using the two-at-a-time diagonal sewing method
  • Squaring up units – trimming HSTs to an exact 3½" for precision
  • Block assembly – combining squares and HSTs into a 9" finished block
  • Quilt center assembly – laying out and sewing 30 blocks with attention to fabric placement
  • Borders – added after the quilt center is assembled, with measurements taken from the quilt center
  • Binding – finishing the quilt edges with a separate binding fabric

Fabric Requirements and Materials

This pattern is designed specifically for Riley Blake Designs fabrics from a coordinating collection featuring woodland and cabin-themed prints. The variety of prints used adds visual richness and texture to the quilt without requiring large yardage of any single accent fabric. The required fabrics include:
