Product Description
Reilly is inspired by traditional Aran pullovers, but adds an unexpected twist—wavy cables for a fun, modern look.
The pullover is shaped to hug the curves for a figure-flattering fit. It's constructed from the bottom up in the round. Sleeves are knit separately and then joined at the yoke, and the remainder of the sweater is worked back and forth in rows.

Reilly Pullover by Triona Murphy
What is Being Made
The Reilly Pullover is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed by Triona Murphy. This garment is a pullover-style jumper available in ten sizes, with finished bust measurements ranging from 28.5 inches to 64.5 inches. The sweater is designed to be worn with 0–1 inch of positive ease, making it a close-fitting, refined garment suitable for various body sizes.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques characteristic of complex sweater construction. The design incorporates cable stitches, as evidenced by the inclusion of cable needle requirements and stitch abbreviations such as RT (right twist) and LPT (left purl twist) found within the pattern instructions. These twisted and cabled elements add visual interest and textural depth to the finished garment.
The sweater is worked primarily in stockinette stitch (st st), which serves as the foundational fabric. The pattern is constructed using circular needle knitting for seamless in-the-round construction, with double-pointed needles (DPNs) employed for smaller circumferences such as cuffs, necklines, or other fitted sections. This advanced construction method minimizes seaming and creates a polished, professional finish.
The pattern requires careful stitch management with multiple stitch markers in different colors—specifically two markers of type/color A, two of type/color B, and four of type/color C—to track pattern repeats, increases, decreases, and design sections throughout the knitting process.
Yarn and Materials
The Reilly Pullover calls for Knit Picks Swish Worsted, a 100% superwash Merino wool yarn that offers both durability and easy care. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 8 balls to 20 balls, with each ball containing 110 yards at a 50-gram weight. This worsted-weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for showcasing the cable and twisted stitch details.
The pattern specifies US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 29–32 inches in length as the primary needles for obtaining gauge in stockinette stitch. A US 6 (4.0mm) circular needle of the same length is also required, typically used for ribbed cuffs, waistbands, or neckline edgings to create a tighter, more elastic fabric. Additional notions include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, double-pointed needles or a spare circular needle for working small circumferences, and scrap yarn or a stitch holder for securing stitches during construction.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on the larger US 7 needles and blocked. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The blocking process is integral to the finishing process, helping to even out stitches and set the cables and twisted stitches for a polished, professional appearance.
