Product Description
Knit a quirky storage place for your phone with this iconic red UK telephone box pattern. This phone box is made from knitted panels with embroidered details, and uses plastic canvas grids to strengthen the walls. Instead of making a storage box, you could simply knit the exterior pieces and stuff them to make a squidgy phone box toy. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the pieces are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, intarsia colour-work, embroidery and seaming to finish. Please be aware that this project does take some time to make up because of the decoration and finishing, so a little patience and attention to detail is needed. The box is 7.5cm wide x 15cm tall.
Red Telephone Box Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
This knitting pattern creates a functional or decorative red telephone box inspired by the iconic UK design. The project can be constructed as either a practical storage container for your phone or as a soft, stuffed toy version. The finished piece features the characteristic red exterior with embroidered details that capture the distinctive appearance of a traditional British telephone box.
Construction Method and Techniques
The red telephone box is constructed from multiple knitted panels that are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round. This flat-working technique allows for easier color-work integration and panel assembly. The pattern incorporates plastic canvas grids inserted within the knitted walls to provide structural reinforcement, ensuring the box maintains its shape and stability. The embroidered details are added after the main knitting is complete, adding decorative elements that enhance the authenticity of the telephone box design.
This is an intermediate-level project that requires patience and attention to detail during both the knitting and finishing stages. The decoration and assembly process is notably time-intensive, making this a project best suited for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with multi-step construction and finishing techniques.
Stitches and Color-work
The pattern utilizes color-work techniques with provided charts to create the red telephone box design. Charts are included in the pattern documentation, with each square representing an individual stitch and each row of squares corresponding to a row of knitting. Knitters must read knit rows (right-side, odd-numbered rows) from right to left according to standard chart conventions. Embroidery stitches are used to add fine details and finishing touches to the completed knitted panels.
