Ramona Pullover by Elizabeth Smith
What is Being Made
The Ramona Pullover is a seamless, top-down knit sweater designed by Elizabeth Smith. This pullover version is adapted from the designer's original Ramona cardigan and offers versatility through three different body shaping options. The garment is available in nine sizes, with finished bust circumferences ranging from 34 inches (86 cm) to 66 inches (168 cm), making it suitable for a wide range of body types.
Construction Technique
This sweater employs top-down seamless construction, a popular technique in modern knitting that allows knitters to try on the garment as they work and easily adjust length and fit. Working from the top down means you begin at the neckline and progress downward, eliminating the need for seaming pieces together. The seamless construction creates a polished, professional finish and allows for continuous in-the-round knitting, which many knitters find more intuitive than working flat.
Stitch Patterns Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) - The primary stitch used throughout the garment. When worked in the round, this stitch is created by knitting every round, producing the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric that is the foundation of most sweater designs.
- Garter Stitch - Used selectively in the pattern. When worked in the round, garter stitch is created by alternating knit and purl rounds, producing a textured, bumpy fabric with horizontal ridges.
Yarn and Materials
The Ramona Pullover is designed to be worked in aran or bulky-weight yarn, which creates a quick-knitting, substantial fabric ideal for cozy sweaters. The pattern is shown in Osprey by Quince & Co, a 100% American wool yarn. This yarn weight typically yields approximately 170 yards per 100 grams. The recommended gauge is 15 stitches and 23 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch in the round after blocking, which is typical for aran-weight yarns on appropriate needle sizes.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly design, the Ramona Pullover is accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward stitch patterns and top-down seamless method make this an excellent introduction to sweater knitting, though knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques and abbreviations before beginning.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern provides detailed guidance for selecting the correct size, recommending that knitters choose a size approximately 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) larger than their actual bust measurement, depending on preferred fit. A complete schematic with all measurements is included in the pattern to ensure proper sizing. The garment shown in the pattern is displayed in Size 2 (38.5 inches / 98 cm) in the A-line body shaping version.
Body Shaping Options
One of the key features of the Ramona Pullover is the inclusion of three different body shaping options, allowing knitters to customize the silhouette to their preferences and body type. This flexibility makes the pattern adaptable to various style preferences, from fitted to relaxed fits.
