Rainy Lake Cardigan by Laura Chau
What Is Being Made
Rainy Lake is a polished yet cozy cardigan featuring a deep V-neck, all-over lace patterning, and long raglan sleeves. This sophisticated layering piece combines elegance with comfort, making it suitable for both casual and refined occasions. The cardigan is designed to be worn with 0–2 inches of ease and closes with a buttonband, offering a flattering silhouette across ten finished sizes ranging from 33 inches to 63.5 inches in chest circumference.
Construction Techniques
Rainy Lake employs a mixed construction method that combines flat and circular knitting techniques. The back and front pieces are worked flat, allowing for precise shaping and lace pattern placement across the body. The sleeves, by contrast, are worked in the round to the armholes, which creates seamless, cylindrical construction ideal for raglan-style sleeves. This hybrid approach balances the benefits of flat knitting for body pieces with the efficiency and consistency of circular knitting for the sleeves.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern incorporates an all-over lace design across the body and sleeves, adding visual interest and a delicate aesthetic. Simple 1x1 ribbing is used for the cuffs and buttonband, providing structure, elasticity, and a polished finish to these functional edges. The stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, with the lace patterning integrated throughout for a cohesive, sophisticated appearance.
Yarn and Materials
Rainy Lake is designed for fingering weight yarn, with a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. The pattern calls for cashmere yarn at approximately 159 yards per 50-gram skein. Yardage requirements range from 1,015 yards for the smallest size to 1,895 yards for the largest size (size 10). The original pattern features Sapphire colorway, requiring between 7 and 13 skeins depending on the finished size selected.
Skill Level and Pattern Origin
Rainy Lake is classified as an advanced knitting pattern, suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with lace work, raglan shaping, and mixed construction methods. The pattern was originally published by Kelbourne Woolens in August 2017 and is available as a downloadable PDF from designer Laura Chau.
