Product Description

This is an ideal first crochet project as it only has two stitches, Chain and Treble. They are combined to make a gorgeous scarf. Perfect with Winter coming up. The ends are folded up and stitched at the sides to create pockets and a fringe attached for a bit of glamour and fun. Rainbow Scarf with Pockets

What is Being Made

The Rainbow Scarf with Pockets is a colorful crochet scarf designed by Jenny Occleshaw that features all seven colors of the rainbow. This beginner-friendly project creates a finished scarf with functional pockets at each end and decorative fringe detailing. The scarf is an ideal first crochet project that can be completed in just a few short hours, making it perfect for crafters new to crochet or those looking for a quick seasonal accessory as winter approaches.

Techniques Used

The construction of this scarf employs several fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible to beginners. The scarf begins with a foundation chain worked lengthwise to create the base structure. The main body is worked in rows using basic stitch patterns. A key feature of this design is the pocket construction: the ends of the finished scarf are folded up and stitched at the sides to create functional pockets. Fringe is then attached to the ends for decorative embellishment and added visual interest. The color work involves changing yarn colors to incorporate all seven rainbow hues throughout the design.

Stitches Used

This pattern is intentionally simplified for beginners, utilizing only two essential crochet stitches:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation chain of 152cm and forms the base of the scarf
  • Treble stitch (tr) – Worked into every chain stitch across the first row after skipping the first three chains, creating the main fabric of the scarf

This limited stitch vocabulary makes the pattern perfect for beginners while still producing an attractive, textured finished garment.

Materials and Tools

The Rainbow Scarf requires 8 ply yarn (also known as DK weight), with one 50-gram ball each in the seven rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. A 4.00mm crochet hook is used throughout the project to work with this yarn weight. Additional materials include a wool needle for darning in yarn ends and sewing up the pockets, and four 2mm buttons in a variety of colors for embellishment. The combination of these materials creates a lightweight, colorful accessory suitable for seasonal wear.
