Product Description
This jumper was inspired by the scenes in Harry Potter films where the students return to Hogwarts by steam train. It has a row of eyelets at the ribs and a surprisingly simple band of colour work around the yoke. It is knitted in parts to the yoke where it is completed on a circular needle. Experienced knitters could easily knit the whole garment in the round to make it seam free. The jumper is knitted in DK wool. I used King Cole Merino Blend for it's anti-tickle properties and the excellent range of colours. Instructions are given for approximate ages 1 to 14 years and include a matching hat.

What is Being Made
The Railway Jumper is a children's knitted sweater inspired by the iconic steam train scenes from the Harry Potter films where students return to Hogwarts. This downloadable knitting pattern is designed for children ages 1 to 13 years, with multiple size options ranging from a finished chest size of 56cm (22") for ages 1-2 years up to 71cm (28") for ages 7-8 years. The jumper features a charming design that combines classic construction techniques with decorative details suitable for intermediate knitters.
Construction Techniques
The Railway Jumper employs a hybrid construction method that combines flat knitting with circular knitting techniques. The body and sleeves are knitted flat in rows, which is a traditional approach that allows for straightforward shaping and easier adjustments. Once the body and sleeves reach the yoke depth, the work transitions to knitting in the round, creating a seamless yoke section. This mixed approach provides flexibility for knitters of varying experience levels. The pattern notes that experienced knitters can modify the construction by knitting the body and sleeves in the round as well, which would eliminate the need for seaming and create a fully seamless garment.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Railway Jumper incorporates several stitch techniques to create visual interest and structure. The pattern includes ribbed sections at the cuffs and hem, which provide elasticity and a finished appearance. A distinctive row of eyelets is featured at each rib, adding a decorative element that references the railway theme. The yoke features a band of simple colour work, introducing a second colour in a straightforward stranded knitting technique that remains accessible to intermediate-level knitters. This colour work adds visual depth without requiring complex Fair Isle or intarsia techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Railway Jumper is designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that creates fabric with good drape and definition suitable for children's garments. The designer used King Cole Merino Blend yarn for the original pattern, chosen specifically for its anti-tickle properties, making it comfortable against sensitive children's skin, and for its excellent range of colour options that allow for creative colour work choices. The pattern requires appropriate needles for DK yarn, with the specific needle sizes detailed in the downloadable PDF instructions. The combination of DK yarn weight and the mixed construction technique creates a garment that is warm enough for layering while remaining lightweight enough for year-round wear.
