Product Description

Quietest Moments Socks are knitted with a lace pattern on the leg and instep. The stretchy lace patterns produce a comfortably fitting sock. The instructions include information on how to adjust the heel flap to give a good fit at the heel and therefore adjust the gusset. This allows adaption for a high instep or to increased ease to prevent constriction.

The socks are knitted from the cuff down, starting with a short garter stitch section which flows into the main Quietest Moments lace pattern. Although the lace pattern involves patterning on every round, columns of reverse stocking stitch assist in keeping the patterning correct and when checking stitch counts are correct for pattern repeats.

The heel flap is worked using the Eye of Partridge slip stitch pattern.

The sock pattern includes both charts and written instructions for the lace. Instructions for construction, including the slip-stitch heel are written.

Quietest Moments Socks by Karen Butler

What is Being Made

Quietest Moments is an advanced knitting pattern for women's socks designed by Karen Butler. The socks are engineered to fit women's UK size 7 / US 9½ / EU 41 foot length, with yardage calculations provided for larger shoe sizes requiring additional yarn. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and includes multiple size options.

Knitting Techniques

This sock pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The socks are knitted in the round, a fundamental technique for seamless sock construction that creates a tubular fabric without side seams. The pattern features lace work patterned on every round, which requires careful attention to stitch placement and yarn overs throughout the sock body. The stretchy lace pattern is specifically designed to produce a comfortably fitting sock while maintaining structural integrity.

The pattern includes heel flap instructions that allow for easy adjustment to achieve a good fit at the heel, accommodating individual variations in foot shape. The socks are knitted from the cuff down, beginning with a short garter stitch cuff before transitioning into the main lace pattern.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch worked in the round, which serves as the foundation for the sock fabric. The pattern incorporates lace stitches featuring yarn overs and decreases that create decorative openwork throughout the sock. Garter stitch is used for the cuff section to provide elasticity and a finished edge. All charts are worked in the round and should be read accordingly.

Materials and Gauge

The pattern requires approximately 220 metres (240 yards) for the smallest size, with yardage increasing to 280 metres (305 yards), 345 metres (375 yards), and 410 metres (450 yards) for progressively larger sizes. 4-ply sock yarn is specified as the appropriate yarn weight for this project.

The design shown was knitted in Literally Yarn's Solar Sock, a premium blend of 75% merino wool, 20% nylon, and 5% stellina, available at 400 metres (437 yards) per 100 grams. The nylon content provides durability and elasticity essential for sock wear, while the merino wool offers temperature regulation and softness. The stellina adds subtle sparkle to the finished fabric.

The required gauge is 32 stitches and 46 rounds per 10 centimetres (4 inches) over stockinette stitch worked in the round, after blocking. This gauge was achieved using 2.5mm needles. Knitters should use alternative needle sizes if necessary to achieve the specified gauge, as gauge accuracy is critical for proper sock fit.

Needles and Notions

The pattern recommends 2.5mm needles (US 1.5) for achieving the correct gauge. Knitters may use their preferred needles for small diameter knitting, such as double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop needles. Additional notions required include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a darning or yarn needle for weaving in ends and any finishing work.
