Product Description

*'Quair’ is an old Scottish word for ‘book’ and this poncho is all about the written word. Youare the author and you ‘write’ the poncho any way you like. Garter ridge lines travel from the bottom of the poncho, ending at various points as if they are lines of poetry or prose. You decide where the lines end and how this part of the poncho looks, writing your own story in stitches.

All proceeds from this pattern will be donated to UKBLM (Black Lives Matter UK) - helping black lives matter in the UK and beyond.

As this poncho is on the small side and covers the upper chest and shoulders without huge amounts of ease, I wanted to make sure it was as size inclusive as possible, while still creating a shape which fits and drapes well. Sizing begins at a 32” bust and goes up to a 60” bust, with around 6” of positive ease included in the size.

Length is taken into account in the size grading, but this can easily be adjusted to suit by adding or decreasing stitches cast on.

What is Being Made

The Quair Poncho is a knitted cape-style garment designed by Sarah Wylie and published by The Knitting Moon. This poncho is a versatile layering piece suitable for a range of bust sizes from 32-34 inches up to 140-145 centimeters, with finished lengths ranging from 48.25 inches to over 61 inches when unfolded. The poncho design offers seven to fourteen size options, making it accessible for various body types and proportions.

Craft and Techniques

This project is created using the knitting craft. The Quair Poncho is designed as a beginner-level pattern, making it an excellent introduction to poncho construction for knitters new to garment shaping and larger projects. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for crafters developing their foundational skills while creating a finished, wearable garment.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided materials, the poncho construction utilizes standard knitting stitches worked on straight needles. The pattern requires the use of a stitch marker to track pattern repeats and shaping increases, and a tapestry needle for finishing and seaming the completed pieces together.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Quair Poncho is designed to be worked in The Fibre Co. Cumbria 4-ply yarn, or any other 4-ply or fingering weight yarn that achieves the required gauge. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 510 meters (558 yards) for the smallest size to 972 meters (1063 yards) for the largest size.

Needles: Knitters will need 3.25mm/US 3 needles to work this pattern and achieve proper gauge with the recommended yarn weight.
