Pyrifolia Asymmetrical Crochet Shawlette by Ruth Nguyen
What Is Being Made
Pyrifolia is an asymmetrical shawlette designed by Ruth Nguyen, inspired by the delicate blossoms and budding fruits of Asian pears (Pyrus pyrifolia) in early spring. This crocheted accessory features a deeply scalloped edge and measures 56 inches [142 cm] in wingspan with a 16-inch [41 cm] depth, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Design Features and Construction
The shawlette begins with a small number of stitches and increases along one edge, allowing crafters to maximize whatever yardage they have available. The design incorporates elegant lace accents throughout, featuring soft clusters that alternate with lace V-stitches for a modern aesthetic. The finished edge showcases a tiny picot border, adding a refined detail to the scalloped perimeter.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
Pyrifolia employs intermediate-level crochet techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills. The pattern utilizes double crochet stitches as the primary stitch construction, combined with lace-work elements that create openwork sections throughout the shawlette. The alternating pattern of soft clusters and lace V-stitches requires understanding of stitch grouping and spacing to achieve the intended drape and visual effect. The picot edging adds a decorative finishing technique to the scalloped border.
Yarn and Materials
Pyrifolia is worked in 4-ply weight yarn, specifically Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply in the colorway Water. This yarn blend combines 45% silk with 55% merino wool, offering a luxurious feel and excellent drape ideal for lace shawlettes. One 50-gram skein provides 399 yards [365 meters], supplying ample yardage for the finished 56-inch wingspan. The pattern is worked with a US F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook, or a size adjusted as needed to obtain the specified gauge of 21 stitches by 8 rows over 4 inches [10 cm] in double crochet.
Additional Supplies and Finishing
- One tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Blocking mats for shaping and setting the finished shawlette
- Rustproof pins to secure the shawlette during blocking
