Pulli Seashore: A Top-Down Raglan Sweater by Ellen Hildebrandt

What Is Being Made

The Pulli Seashore is a classic knitted pullover sweater featuring a top-down raglan construction with a round yoke. Available in two sizes—S/M and L/XL—this design offers versatility for different body measurements. The sweater is constructed seamlessly from the neckline downward, making it an efficient and popular method for garment creation.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern accommodates two distinct yarn options, allowing knitters to choose based on availability and preference:

  • Option 1: La Parisienne by Nature's Luxury (100% Merino, 460 meters per 100 grams). The pattern calls for 200 grams total in two coordinating colors—for example, 100g in Le Métro (light gray) and 100g in Montmartre (gray).
  • Option 2: Fingering Merino & Silk by DyeforYarn (75% Merino, 25% Silk, 400 meters per 100 grams). Similarly, 200 grams total in two colors—such as 100g in Fading Stormy Night (light blue) and 100g in Nightmare Of The Blue Sea (blue).

Both yarns are 4-ply weight, providing excellent stitch definition and durability. The merino content ensures breathability and comfort, while the silk blend option adds luxury and subtle sheen.

Needles and Notions

  • Two 3mm circular needles (primary needles for the main fabric)
  • Two 2.5mm circular needles (for ribbed edgings and cuffs)
  • Scrap yarn or separate circular needles for holding sleeve stitches
  • Two stitch markers for tracking raglan increases and pattern repeats

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches by 42 rows over 10 by 10 centimeters, worked in stockinette stitch (smooth knit). Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements in both size options. Knitters should swatch carefully before beginning the sweater to ensure proper fit.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Construction Method: The Pulli Seashore employs a top-down raglan yoke technique. This method begins at the neckline and increases outward along four raglan lines (two for the front, two for the back) until the desired bust circumference is reached. The sleeves and body are then separated and completed individually, eliminating the need for seaming.

Primary Stitches and Techniques:

  • Stockinette Stitch (glatt rechts): The main fabric is worked in smooth stockinette, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, or knitting every round when working in the round.
  • Garter Stitch (kraus rechts): Used for textured edgings and ribbed sections. In flat knitting, this involves knitting every row. In circular knitting, it requires alternating rounds of knit and purl.
  • Yarn Overs (U): Decorative increases that create small eyelet holes, often used in lace or textured pattern details.
  • Twisted Stitches (vs): Stitches worked through the back loop to create a twisted, more textured appearance.
  • Decreases: The pattern uses standard decrease methods such as knit two together (zuss) to shape the raglan lines and maintain stitch count balance.
  • Slip Stitches (abh): Stitches are slipped rather than worked to create clean edges and transitions between sections.

Ribbing: Ribbed sections (typically 1x1 or 2x2 rib) are worked at the neckline, cuffs, and hem using the smaller 2.5mm needles. Ribbing provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Pulli Seashore is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The top-down raglan method is
