Pretty Simple Bobble Blanket by Melu Crochet
What is Being Made
The Pretty Simple Bobble Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket pattern designed by Melu Crochet. This finished blanket measures approximately 62cm x 72cm (22½ inches x 28½ inches), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or lap blanket. The pattern features a simple construction with a decorative bobble stripe detail that adds texture and visual interest to the piece.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The main body is worked in half treble crochet (htr), a basic stitch that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern incorporates the following stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and turning chains
- Half treble crochet (htr) – forms the primary fabric of the blanket
- Double crochet (dc) – used for border finishing
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and securing stitches
- Bobble stitch – a decorative textured stitch created by working multiple yarn overs and pulls through a single stitch, then closing all loops together to form a raised bobble
The bobble stitch technique involves repeating a sequence of yarn over and pull-through actions five times until six loops remain on the hook, then pulling yarn through all loops simultaneously to create a dimensional bobble effect.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn and requires a 4mm crochet hook. The total yarn requirement is approximately 225g, distributed across three color sections:
- Main body color: 115g
- Bobble stripe color: 80g
- Border color: 30g
The pattern designer used Stylecraft Special DK yarn in the following colors: 145g Cloud Blue for the main body and border, 40g White for bobble stripe 1, and 40g Denim for bobble stripe 2. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends. The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology.
Tension and Sizing
The recommended tension is 15 stitches and 12 rows in half treble crochet to 10cm (4 inches) using a 4mm hook. This tension measurement serves as a guide for sizing and fabric drape, though the pattern will work successfully even if your personal tension differs slightly from the specified gauge.
