Product Description

The Polaris Cowl was quickly whipped up during the blisters Polar Vortex that hit my home here in Northern Indiana. With -40 degree weather, I needed something that would work up as fast as lightning, insanely warm and use up a small bit of yarn. Voila, the Polaris Cowl was created! This pattern is seriously easy-peasy, and gives infinite hugs to keep your neck from freezing.

Polaris Cowl by Amber Zumbrun

What is Being Made

The Polaris Cowl is a versatile crocheted neck accessory designed by Amber Zumbrun. This pattern offers three size options to suit different preferences: a Single Loop Cowl, a Double Loop Infinity Scarf, and an XL Double Loop Infinity Scarf. The finished piece features a classic infinity scarf construction that can be worn as a cozy neck wrap or layered for added warmth and style.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Polaris Cowl employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern utilizes a straightforward rectangular construction method, working in rows to build the fabric. The finishing process involves joining the ends together using the mattress stitch, a seaming technique that creates an invisible join when the right sides of the fabric are placed together. This method ensures a seamless, professional appearance in the final infinity cowl design. Yarn ends are woven in neatly to complete the project.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch): Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Double Crochet (Dc): The primary stitch used to build the fabric, worked consistently across rows to create a dense, structured texture

The pattern notes that Ch 2 counts as a stitch, meaning the turning chain at the beginning of each row is incorporated into the stitch count rather than worked as an additional stitch.

Materials Required

  • 6 mm crochet hook: Sized appropriately for the chunky yarn weight
  • #5 yarn (Bulky/Chunky weight): The sample was created using Lion Brand Scarfie, a chunky yarn ideal for quick projects
  • Darning needle: Used for weaving in yarn ends and executing the mattress stitch seam
  • Scissors: For cutting yarn

Pattern Details

Written in US crochet terms, this beginner-level pattern is accessible to those new to crochet. The construction begins with a chain foundation of 21 stitches, followed by double crochet stitches worked across to establish a 20-stitch width. Subsequent rows repeat the double crochet pattern, with the turning chain serving as the first stitch of each row. The Single Loop Cowl version requires rows 1 through 42, creating a rectangular piece that is then seamed into a continuous loop using the mattress stitch technique.
