Product Description
There’s nothing Pete loves more than fish. He has them for breakfast, lunch and dinner... and sometimes even as a midnight feast! Pete insists that fishing is a serious business and refused to brave the Arctic snow without his fishing attire.
Polar Pete Knitted Toy by Cilla Webb
What is Being Made
Polar Pete is an intermediate-level knitted toy designed by Cilla Webb. This charming stuffed animal character is a penguin with a passion for fishing, complete with Arctic-themed clothing and accessories. The toy is created using the knitting craft and is suitable for crafters with intermediate knitting experience.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses fundamental knitting techniques combined with simple shaping methods to create a three-dimensional toy. The construction involves knitting flat pieces that are then sewn together and stuffed to form the finished character. The design demonstrates how basic increases and decreases can transform a simple rectangle into sculptural forms suitable for toy making.
Stitches and Shaping Methods Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary stitch used throughout the toy, creating a smooth, flat fabric that forms the base of all pieces
- Knit Front and Back (kfb) – An increase technique used to add stitches, creating the widest point of the toy pieces
- Knit Two Together (k2tog) – A decrease technique used to reduce stitches and shape the toy, creating tapered sections
- Garter Stitch edges – Created through knit stitches at the beginning and end of rows to provide structure
- Cast off – Finished loosely to allow flexibility when seaming
Construction Process
The toy is constructed by knitting individual pieces that are later assembled. The pattern begins with a cast-on row, followed by strategic increases using the kfb technique to expand the stitch count to 42 stitches. The piece then works in stockinette stitch for 15 rows to establish height and body. Decreases using k2tog are then introduced in multiple stages, gradually reducing the stitch count from 28 stitches to 21 stitches and finally to 17 stitches. This creates the tapered shape characteristic of toy limbs. After casting off, pieces are sewn together starting at the bottom, with stuffing added before the final seams are completed.
Yarn Materials
The project uses Wendy Merino DK yarn, a double knitting weight yarn spun from 100% Merino wool. Each ball contains 116 meters of yarn per 50 grams. The specific yarn colors and quantities required are:
- MC1 (Main Color 1): 100g of Wendy Merino DK Cloud Dancer in white
- MC2 (Main Color 2): 25g of Wendy Merino DK Birch in beige
- CC1 (Contrast Color 1): 100g of Wendy Merino DK Crepe in yellow
- CC2 (Contrast Color 2): 50g of Wendy Merino DK Periwinkle in light blue
- Accent color: A small amount of Wendy Merino DK Jet in black for details
The use of Merino wool provides softness and durability suitable for a toy that may receive frequent handling and play.
Needles and Equipment
- Needles: 3.5mm straight needles are used for knitting all pieces
- Additional supplies: Tape and stuffing material are required to complete the toy after knitting is finished
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This pattern uses DK (double knitting) weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating toys with good stitch definition and structure. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques such as increases and decreases. The combination of multiple yarn colors and the assembly process require attention to detail and basic finishing skills.
