This pattern was designed for the {Among Friends} Yarn Club with Sincere Sheep and Knitted Wit.
This mitt and hat set features a charming loop stitch that looks like a cable, but isn’t! The graduated columns of loop stitch on the mitts echo your pointing fingers. Your choice of cap or beret features a sideways knit band of loop stitches; the body of the hat is picked up along the edge of the band.
The pattern uses approximately 330 yards/4 oz/114 g of DK weight yarn. I used Knitted Wit DK, 85% Polwarth Wool, 15% Tussah Silk. (approx 50 g for mitts, 62 g for hat) Gauge is 6 st/inch in stockinette stitch for mitts, 5 st/in for hat; I used a US size 3 needle for mitts, size 5 for hat.
Charts and line by line instructions for loop stitch detail are included.
This downloadable knitting pattern set includes two coordinating accessories: a pair of Pointer Mitts and a matching Cap or Beret. Both projects showcase advanced knitting techniques and are designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, making them ideal for knitters seeking a sophisticated accessory collection with visual interest and technical depth.
The Pointer Mitts are hand coverings featuring a distinctive loop stitch detail that creates a cable-like appearance without the complexity of traditional cable knitting. The mitts are constructed as tubes with ribbed construction, providing stretch and comfort for various hand sizes. The Cap or Beret is a hat option that allows knitters to choose their preferred silhouette, both utilizing the same charming loop stitch design to coordinate with the mitts.
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn totaling approximately 330 yards (4 oz/114g) for the complete set. The designer recommends Knitted Wit DK or Sincere Sheep Luminous, both composed of 85% Polwarth Wool and 15% Tussah Silk. Approximately 50 grams of yarn is needed for the mitts, with 62 grams required for the hat.
Needles and Tools: US size 3 double-pointed needles are used for the mitts to achieve the correct gauge. The hat requires US size 5 circular needle (16 inches) and double-pointed needles. A size H crochet hook and smooth waste yarn are needed for the provisional cast on technique used in the hat. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in ends, and a short length of smooth yarn serves as a stitch holder for the thumb openings.
The mitt pattern is worked at a gauge of 6 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch. However, the designer notes that gauge is not critically important for the mitts due to the forgiving nature of ribbing construction. The real test of proper fit is to try the mitt on your hand after knitting 8 rounds—if it feels comfortable, the gauge is correct. Knitters can adjust needle sizes up for a larger mitt or down for a smaller mitt without compromising the pattern's integrity. The yarn performs beautifully at multiple gauges, offering flexibility for customization.
The hat is worked at a gauge of 5.5 stitches per inch before blocking, providing a more structured fit than the flexible mitts.
This pattern set combines two essential cold-weather accessories with coordinating design elements. The loop stitch creates visual texture and interest while remaining accessible to advanced knitters. The ribbed construction of the mitts ensures they stay in place and provide warmth without bulk, while the hat options allow knitters to choose between a structured beret or a more casual cap silhouette. The use of premium yarn with silk content adds luxury and drape to both pieces, making them suitable for gift-giving or personal wear.
