Pine Tree & Cone Fingerless Gloves by LoisLeigh

What Is Being Made

The Pine Tree & Cone Fingerless Gloves are a pair of hand-warming accessories designed by LoisLeigh Anderson for AndersonsCreations. These fingerless gloves feature decorative pine tree and pine cone motifs, combining functional warmth with nature-inspired aesthetic appeal. The gloves are sized for adult female hands with a circumference of 7¾ inches (20 cm) around the hand above the thumb, making them ideal for keeping hands protected during cold weather while leaving fingers free for dexterity and tactile tasks.

Techniques and Construction

This knitting pattern employs in-the-round knitting using double-pointed needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The design incorporates a thumb gusset construction, which allows for proper shaping around the thumb area while maintaining the glove's structural integrity. The pattern includes charted colorwork or stitch patterns to create the pine tree and pine cone designs, requiring knitters to follow visual charts alongside written instructions. The pattern provides complete abbreviations and detailed instructions suitable for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with circular knitting and basic colorwork or textured stitch patterns.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): The primary stitch used throughout the construction of these fingerless gloves
  • Rounds (Rnd): Worked in continuous rounds using double-pointed needles to create seamless fabric
  • Charted stitches: Pattern includes charts for executing the pine tree and cone motifs

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, with the original design using Misti Alpaca Suri Silk in Hunter Green (80% baby Suri Alpaca/20% silk blend). The yarn requirements are 2 skeins totaling approximately 155 yards (54 grams per skein). Knitters may substitute any DK weight yarn of comparable yardage and weight. Additional materials include one set of size 3 US (3.25mm) double-pointed knitting needles, a tapestry needle for weaving in finished ends, scrap yarn for holding the thumb gusset stitches, and 3 stitch markers—one for marking the beginning of round and one for each end of the thumb gusset.

Gauge and Sizing

The working gauge is 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch (2.5 cm), which is standard for DK weight yarn on size 3 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished gloves fit correctly at the specified adult female circumference of 7¾ inches (20 cm).

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, basic stitch work, and the ability to read and follow charted patterns. The thumb gusset construction and in-the-round technique require intermediate-level experience.
