Personalised Christmas Baubles Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from Gift Horse Kits provides instructions for creating handmade Christmas baubles as festive decorations. A single 100g ball of chunky yarn produces seven to eight completed baubles, making this an efficient project for creating multiple ornaments. The baubles can be personalized through color selection and optional embellishments, allowing crafters to customize their decorations to match their holiday aesthetic.

Craft and Technique Overview

Knitting Christmas baubles is an excellent beginner-level project that introduces fundamental knitting techniques in a small, manageable format. The pattern teaches essential shaping methods used throughout knitting, including increases and decreases that form the spherical structure of each bauble. Working with chunky yarn on larger needles creates quick results, making this ideal for crafters new to knitting who want to complete a project rapidly.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Knit Front and Back (kfb): An increase technique that creates two stitches from one by knitting into both the front and back loops of a single stitch. This method is used to expand the stitch count when shaping the bauble.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches individually to the right needle, then inserting the left needle through their front loops and knitting them together as one stitch.
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count by knitting two stitches together as a single stitch, used to shape the bauble as it closes.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for chunky weight yarn, with the designer recommending Rico Designs Essentials Mega Wool Chunky in 100g balls. The pattern specifically references Red (colour code 009), though this yarn was previously marketed as Rico Essentials Mega Merino, so crafters should search for either name. Any chunky yarn in any color works equally well, and the pattern encourages color experimentation. Two-color baubles can be created by changing yarn color mid-project.

Needles and Tools: 4mm straight knitting needles are required for working with the chunky yarn. Additional materials include toy stuffing for padding the baubles, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a sharp sewing needle for attaching embellishments and felt pieces.

Embellishment Options

The pattern provides materials for personalizing each bauble with decorative details. White and red felt pieces can be cut and sewn onto the knitted sphere. White and black cotton thread allows for adding facial features or other designs. Red thread is included for additional detail work. Small sequins are listed as optional embellishments for added sparkle and festive appeal, giving crafters flexibility in their personalization choices.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern provided by independent designer Gift Horse Kits. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and clear material lists to ensure crafters have everything needed before beginning their project.
