Peanuts Hat by Teti's Knit Garden

What is Being Made

The Peanuts Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted winter hat designed by Tetiana Lutsak at Nutsknitwear Design. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a cozy, double-layered brim hat perfect for winter and late autumn wear. The hat is worked seamlessly in the round, making it an ideal project for knitters new to circular knitting techniques.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The hat is constructed by working in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless finished garment. The pattern offers flexibility in brim construction with two distinct options:

  • Free Folding Brim: A simpler option that creates a naturally folded edge through basic stitch manipulation
  • Double Fixed Brim: A more structured approach using provisional cast-on techniques, such as crochet chain cast-on, which allows the knitter to pick up live stitches later for a secure, finished edge

The pattern recommends reviewing the entire instructions before beginning, a best practice for seamless in-the-round projects.

Stitches Used

The Peanuts Hat utilizes basic knitting stitches accessible to beginners. The brim section features a ribbed stitch pattern combining knit and purl stitches in alternation (k1, p1 ribbing), which creates elasticity and helps the hat fit snugly. The pattern begins with a slip stitch edge for a neat selvage, followed by the repeating knit-purl sequence that characterizes classic hat ribbing.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The pattern calls for Drops Nepal yarn or any similar non-superwash yarn that matches the specified gauge. Drops Nepal is a blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca, offering warmth and softness ideal for winter accessories. Each 50-gram ball yields approximately 75 meters of yarn.

Yarn requirements include:

  • Color 1 (Main Color): Approximately 80 grams (shown in orange 2920)
  • Color 2 (Accent Color): Approximately 20 grams

The pattern is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight classification that knits quickly and creates a substantial, durable fabric suitable for winter hats. Knitters should use needles appropriate for aran weight yarn and the chosen cast-on method, with the pattern accommodating two finished sizes achieved through different stitch counts: 85 stitches or 97 stitches cast on, depending on desired fit.

Pattern Overview

Described as "super easy," the Peanuts Hat pattern is structured for accessibility. The seamless in-the-round construction and straightforward stitch patterns make it an excellent beginner project for those learning circular knitting. The inclusion of two brim options allows knitters to choose based on their comfort level and desired aesthetic, with the double-layered brim providing both practical warmth and visual interest.
