Product Description

The Peaks Scarf is a texture-full project that uses the Modified Prong Stitch. You'll enjoy creating front post stitches but without the gap from the skipped stitch. The sample shows the standard width with a color block for a pop of color that can be show off at one end. With a generous length, you can style your scarf in several ways. I'm always a fan of tucking the ends and wearing it like a cowl for ultimate warmth in the winter.

There are three different widths for your preferred style, skinny, standard and super. The skinny scarf is great for using only about 300 yards of yarn.

SKILL LEVEL Intermediate

This pattern is not to be duplicated or resold, and not to be reproduced commercially. You may sell finished products on Etsy, at farmers markets, and craft fairs, but please credit Creations By Courtney as the pattern’s author.

What Is Being Made

The Peaks Scarf is a downloadable crochet pattern designed by Creations By Courtney that creates a textured scarf featuring a distinctive peaked or dimensional surface. This intermediate-level project is available in three size options to suit different preferences and yarn quantities, ranging from a delicate skinny width to a generous super-wide drape.

Available Sizes

  • Skinny: 4 inches wide by 60 inches long (10 cm × 152.5 cm)
  • Standard: 6.5 inches wide by 65 inches long (14 cm × 165 cm)
  • Super Wide: 10.5 inches wide by 80 inches long (26.5 cm × 200 cm)

Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern employs several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its textured peak design. The construction utilizes chainless starting double crochet (CSDC) for an efficient foundation, allowing crafters to begin their work without the traditional chain base. This technique creates a more polished edge and reduces the need for additional setup rows.

The primary stitches featured in the Peaks Scarf include:

  • Double crochet (dc): The main stitch providing structure and drape to the scarf
  • Single crochet (sc): Used for shaping and detail work
  • Foundation double crochet (fdc): An alternative foundation method offering flexibility in starting the project
  • Split front post treble crochet (Split FPtr): A textured stitch that creates the distinctive peaked appearance by working around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops, producing dimensional relief
  • Chain (ch): Used for spacing and shaping throughout the pattern

The split front post treble technique is essential to the scarf's visual character, as it creates raised peaks across the fabric surface. This stitch involves skipping stitches strategically to build the dimensional texture that defines the design.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Peaks Scarf pattern calls for Caron Simply Soft yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber known for its softness and easy care. The yarn is worked at an aran weight, providing good stitch definition and a balanced drape suitable for scarves. Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Skinny width: 200 yards
  • Standard width: 384 yards
  • Super Wide width: 630 yards

The pattern specifies two coordinating colors from the Caron Simply Soft line: Ocean (Color A) and Dark Country Blue (Color B), creating a sophisticated color-blocked or striped effect depending on how the pattern is worked.

Tools and Equipment

To complete this project, crafters will need a US I/9 (5.50 mm) crochet hook, which is sized to work with aran-weight yarn and achieve proper gauge. Additional supplies include scissors for finishing, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a measuring tape for checking dimensions and gauge accuracy throughout the project.

Gauge and Finishing Standards

The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 pattern stitches and 12 pattern rows equaling 4 inches (10 cm), measured on the back of the fabric. Achieving proper gauge is important for ensuring the scarf reaches the intended finished dimensions and drapes correctly. The pattern includes clear notation for right side (RS) identification, helping crafters maintain consistency in stitch placement and texture direction.

This intermediate-level pattern is well-suited for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore post stitches and dimensional stitch techniques. The use of premium acrylic yarn makes the finished scarf durable, easy to care for, and suitable for gifting or personal wear across seasons.
