Palermo Scarf in Red Heart Ombra

What is Being Made

The Palermo Scarf is a beginner-friendly knitted accessory designed by the Italian Collection Design Team. This rectangular scarf measures 26 x 75 inches (66 x 191 cm), making it a versatile length suitable for various styling options. The finished scarf features a classic design enhanced by the color-shifting properties of Red Heart Ombra yarn, which creates a gradient effect throughout the piece.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This project employs straightforward knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The main body of the scarf is worked entirely in Garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that look identical on both sides of the work. Garter stitch is an excellent choice for beginners because it requires only one basic stitch and creates a stable, forgiving fabric that resists curling.

The scarf construction begins with casting on 84 stitches and continues in Garter stitch until the piece reaches 75 inches in length or the desired finished measurement. Once the body is complete, all stitches are bound off to secure the final edge.

Finishing and Embellishment

The Palermo Scarf features decorative fringe along both short edges, adding movement and visual interest to the finished piece. The fringe is created by cutting yarn lengths of 14 inches each, folding them in half, and attaching them through corner stitches and every third stitch along each short edge using a standard fringe attachment method. This technique involves pulling the folded edge through a stitch, then threading the yarn ends through the folded loop and securing tightly. After fringe attachment, all loose yarn ends are woven in to complete the project.

Materials and Tools

This project requires Red Heart Ombra yarn in the colorway Fiamma (Art R182). The yarn is a chunky weight available in 3.5 ounce (100 gram) balls containing 249 yards (228 meters) per ball. Six balls of yarn are needed to complete the scarf. Knitting is worked on 6mm (US 10) Susan Bates knitting needles, and a yarn needle is required for weaving in ends and attaching fringe.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge for this project is 15 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) worked in Stockinette stitch (knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side), though the actual scarf body is constructed in Garter stitch. Knitters are advised to check their gauge before beginning and may use any needle size necessary to achieve the specified gauge, ensuring the finished scarf meets the intended dimensions.

Skill Level

This scarf is rated as a beginner project, making it ideal for new knitters. The simple Garter stitch construction requires minimal stitch knowledge, and the straightforward pattern allows beginners to practice fundamental techniques while creating a wearable finished object. The fringe finishing adds a professional touch without requiring advanced skills.
