Product Description

This is a Pattern for an Owl Potholder, Dishcloth, kitchen Cloth. It’s worked in rows with Tapestry Crochet and the back rows are worked from the back to front to get a clearer picture. The end product can also be used as pieces for a baby blanket or a big blanket. The pattern can be worked with the Graph or with the row by row explanation.

My patterns are all in German and English, in US terms. My patterns are all created by myself which I really enjoy. It takes a while to create a pattern, crochet the pattern and write everything down but if there are any issues please do not hesitate to send me a message either here or on my Instagram account _Lovelyyarns.

I love creating squares and eventually sew them together to a beautiful baby blanket, car blanket, throw or big blanket.

This is a pattern to Crochet your own square which can be used as face cloth, dish cloth, wash cloth, wall decoration or my personal favourite as a square for blankets. Perfect as a gift or just to keep

Owl Potholder by Karin Burkart

What Is Being Made

The Owl Potholder is a versatile crochet project designed by Karin Burkart that functions as a potholder, dishcloth, or kitchen cloth. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished piece measuring approximately 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inches). Beyond its primary use in the kitchen, the pattern is designed with flexibility in mind—individual pieces can be combined to create larger projects such as a baby blanket or full-sized blanket, making it an excellent choice for crafters looking to build modular textile projects.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs Tapestry Crochet as its primary technique, a method that allows crafters to incorporate multiple colors and create detailed designs while working in a single color per row. The pattern is worked in rows, with a unique construction method where back rows are worked from back to front. This deliberate approach helps achieve a clearer, more defined picture of the owl design as it develops. The pattern provides two ways to follow the instructions: crafters can work directly from a provided graph or follow detailed row-by-row written explanations, accommodating different learning preferences and skill levels.

Stitches Used

The Owl Potholder pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Single Crochet (SC) – the primary stitch used throughout the piece
  • Single Crochet from Back to Front (SCB) – used for back rows to create the directional construction
  • Chain Stitch (CH) – used for foundation and transitions
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and secure stitches
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – included in the stitch repertoire for this pattern

All stitches are written in US crochet terminology. An important note for crafters: the chain stitch never counts as the first stitch in this pattern, which affects row counting and stitch placement.

Materials and Tools

The Owl Potholder is worked with Cotton DK weight yarn in two colors, requiring approximately 25 grams of each color for completion. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for kitchen textiles like potholders and dishcloths due to its durability, absorbency, and heat resistance. A 4 mm crochet hook is used with this yarn weight. The pattern provides a gauge of 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) equals 20 rows by 20 single crochet stitches, which helps ensure proper sizing and drape of the finished piece.

Color Work and Construction Details

The two-color tapestry crochet design is managed by carrying the unused yarn throughout the entire piece to maintain an even gauge. When working front-facing rows, the unused thread is held in the back of the work. When working back rows, the thread is held in the front. The graph provided in the pattern marks the second color with an X symbol, making it easy to follow the owl design. This structured approach to color work ensures that the final potholder displays a clear, well-defined owl motif on both sides.

Skill Level

Classified as a beginner-friendly project, the Owl Potholder is accessible to crafters new to crochet while offering enough structure and technique to provide a satisfying learning experience. The combination of basic stitches, clear instructions, and visual graph support makes this pattern an ideal introduction to tapestry crochet techniques.
