Overgang Jacket by HelstrupDesign
What Is Being Made
The Overgang is an advanced-level knitted cardigan jacket designed by HelstrupDesign. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a structured, fitted cardigan available in six sizes ranging from S to XXXL. The finished cardigan features a classic silhouette with precise measurements provided for each size, making it suitable for a range of body types and fit preferences.
Finished Measurements
The cardigan is designed with the following finished dimensions across all six sizes:
- Bust circumference: 98 to 138 centimeters (sizes S through XXXL)
- Cardigan width: 128 to 168 centimeters
- Length: 83 to 88 centimeters, with size XXL measuring 97 centimeters
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Overgang employs structured pattern knitting as its primary technique. The pattern features a texture or structure stitch that creates visual interest and dimension throughout the garment. This advanced-level project requires proficiency in reading knitting charts and maintaining consistent stitch tension across multiple needles and working sessions.
The construction method uses circular needles for the main body sections, allowing for seamless or minimal-seam construction. The pattern includes finishing techniques such as edge binding off and button band assembly, indicating a professionally finished cardigan with functional closures.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Overgang is designed for DK weight yarn (double knitting weight), which provides a balanced fabric suitable for structured garments. The recommended yarn specifications are:
- Yarn weight: DK weight, approximately 110–115 meters per 50 grams
- Suggested yarn options: Merino 115 from Hjertegarn, UK Alpaca Superfine DK, Peter Pan Merino Baby DK, or Chester Wool DK (225 meters per 50g ball)
- Total yarn quantity: 800–1,300 grams depending on size (S requires 800–900g; XXXL requires 1,200–1,300g)
The pictured sample shown in the pattern was knitted in size L using Merino 115 from Hjertegarn, demonstrating the finished appearance of the cardigan in this particular yarn.
Tools and Notions Required
To complete the Overgang cardigan, knitters will need the following equipment and supplies:
- Needles: One 4mm circular needle (60 centimeters length) for the main body
- Needles: One 4mm circular needle (40 centimeters length) or 4mm double-pointed needles for smaller circumference sections
- Crochet hook: 3.5mm crochet hook for finishing edges
- Notions: Yarn needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and buttons for cardigan closures
Gauge and Pattern Density
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this advanced project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 32 rows per 10 centimeters in the structured pattern stitch. Knitters should swatch the pattern stitch before beginning to ensure their individual tension matches the specified gauge, as variations in tension will affect the finished dimensions of the cardigan.
Pattern Format and Difficulty Level
The Overgang is classified as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing knitters to access instructions digitally and print them as needed. The pattern begins with casting on 230 to 298 stitches depending on the chosen size, establishing the foundation for the cardigan body.
