Outlander Inspired Grey Black Stripe Green Shawl Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a large triangular shawl inspired by Outlander aesthetics, featuring a sophisticated color palette of dark grey, black, and forest green stripes. After wet blocking, the finished shawl measures approximately 189 cm (74 1/2 inches) across the width at the top and 84 cm (33 inches) in length at the mid back, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The shawl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for crafters with beginner to intermediate experience. The pattern employs a straightforward approach to color work, incorporating striped sections in multiple coordinating colors rather than complex colorwork methods. The triangular shawl shape is achieved through strategic increases that allow the piece to expand from a narrow top edge to the full width at the base.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure utilizes Garter Stitch, a foundational knitting technique created by knitting every row. This classic stitch provides excellent drape and texture while remaining accessible to knitters of varying skill levels. Garter stitch also creates a reversible fabric with consistent appearance on both sides, making it ideal for a shawl that will be worn and viewed from multiple angles.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for 7 skeins of Drops Nepal from Garnstudio, a premium yarn blend containing 65% Highlands Peruvian Wool and 35% Alpaca. This yarn is classified as 10 ply / aran / worsted weight. Each skein provides approximately 82 yards (75 meters) and weighs 1.8 oz (50 grams).

The color composition includes:

  • 4 skeins of color no 0506, Dark Grey mix (primary color)
  • 1 skein of color no 8903, Black (accent stripe)
  • 2 skeins of color no 8906, Forest Green (secondary accent)

Note that 1 skein of Forest Green is nearly sufficient for the pattern, and the hemline stripe can be shortened if yardage is limited.

Needles and Gauge

While Drops Nepal yarn typically recommends US 8 / 5 mm needles, this pattern specifically requires US 10.5 / 7 mm circular needles or long straight needles to accommodate all stitches comfortably. The larger needle size creates a more open fabric that enhances drape and allows the shawl to achieve its intended dimensions.

The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches x 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter Stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the shawl drapes as designed.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner to intermediate, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle a larger project. The straightforward garter stitch construction and simple striping technique require no advanced skills, though completing a shawl of this size demands patience and commitment to the project.
