Outlander Inspired Claire Brown Shawl with Black Stripes by Lilith Creation
What is Being Made
This is a large triangular shawl inspired by the Outlander series, featuring a sophisticated two-color design with a rich brown base and contrasting black stripes. The finished shawl measures approximately 191 cm (75 inches) wide at the top and 86 cm (34 inches) long at the mid back after wet blocking, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The shawl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for knitters with beginner to intermediate experience. The pattern employs garter stitch as the primary stitch pattern, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an excellent choice for beginners while still producing an elegant finished garment. The two-color striping technique adds visual interest and is achieved by alternating between the brown and black yarn at designated intervals throughout the pattern.
The shawl's triangular shape is created through strategic increases that expand the width progressively from the top edge downward, a classic construction method for this garment type. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch counts to maintain proper shaping throughout the knitting process.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch – The foundational stitch throughout the entire pattern, created by knitting every row on both sides
- Increases – Used to shape the triangular silhouette and expand the shawl width
Materials Required
This pattern calls for Drops Nepal yarn from Garnstudio, an aran weight (10 ply / worsted) blend composed of 65% Highlands Peruvian Wool and 35% Alpaca. The yarn combination provides warmth, softness, and a subtle sheen characteristic of alpaca fiber. A total of 7 skeins is required: 5 skeins in color no. 0612 (Medium Brown mix) for the primary color and 2 skeins in color no. 8903 (Black) for the striping detail. Each skein weighs 1.8 oz (50 g) and contains approximately 82 yards (75 meters).
The pattern specifies US 10.5 / 7 mm circular needles or long straight needles to accommodate all stitches comfortably. While the yarn manufacturer recommends US 8 / 5 mm needles, the designer has intentionally sized up to US 10.5 / 7 mm to achieve the desired fabric drape and finished dimensions. The larger needle size creates a more open, fluid fabric that enhances the shawl's elegance.
Gauge Information
The pattern establishes gauge using garter stitch: 13 stitches and 26 rows over a 4-inch by 4-inch (10 x 10 cm) swatch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the specified finished measurements after wet blocking, which sets the final shape and dimensions of the shawl.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner to intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals but may be developing their skills with larger projects and color work. The straightforward garter stitch construction and simple striping technique provide an excellent opportunity to practice consistency and tension control while creating a sophisticated, wearable garment.
