Amaze your eyes! This cap design uses colored rectangles to create the optical illusion of rounded ovals. The design only looks complicated - pattern includes easy instructions to create the optical illusion. Can be made in any sock yarn. You need about 110 yds of each of 2 colors. To create the illusion, you need to choose a yarn that is not fuzzy, to get crisp edges on your color blocks. You should choose colors that contrast with each other to show off the design. Fit is a little slouchy on top. The pattern is the same for both sizes. Smaller size uses 0s and 1s; larger size uses 1s and 2s.

Optika Cap by Cheryl Andrews

What is Being Made

The Optika Cap is an adult knitted hat designed to showcase an optical illusion created through strategic color placement. This cap design uses colored rectangles arranged in a pattern that tricks the eye into perceiving rounded ovals, creating a visually striking effect that appears far more complex than the actual construction process. Available in two adult sizes—medium and large—this downloadable knitting pattern offers an engaging project for advanced knitters seeking a design with visual impact.

Design and Optical Illusion Technique

The genius of the Optika Cap lies in its deceptively simple approach to creating a sophisticated optical illusion. Rather than relying on curved shaping or intricate stitch work, the pattern uses rectangular color blocks positioned strategically throughout the cap. When these blocks are knitted in contrasting colors, the human eye perceives them as rounded ovals, producing a mesmerizing three-dimensional effect. The pattern instructions are straightforward and accessible, demystifying what appears to be a complicated design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This project is worked in the round using double point needles, a fundamental technique for hat construction that creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern employs colorwork techniques to achieve the optical illusion, requiring knitters to work with two colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition. The illusion pattern itself is knitted using standard knit stitches, with color changes creating the visual effect. Advanced knitters will appreciate the gauge-dependent nature of this project, as the sizing difference between medium and large is achieved through adjusting the gauge rather than increasing stitch counts.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Optika Cap calls for sock weight yarn, requiring approximately 28 grams each of two contrasting colors. The sample garments were knitted using Brown Sheep Wildfoote, a durable blend of 75% washable wool and 25% nylon (50 grams, 197 meters per skein). Yarn selection is critical for this design: the pattern specifically recommends choosing a non-fuzzy yarn to achieve crisp, clean edges on the color blocks, which is essential for the optical illusion to read clearly. Colors should contrast sharply with one another to maximize the visual impact of the design.

Needles and Gauge Requirements

  • Medium Size: Sets of 5 double point needles in sizes 0 and 1, with a gauge of 34 stitches by 36 rows over 4 inches when knitting the illusion pattern on larger needles in the round
  • Large Size: Sets of 5 double point needles in sizes 1 and 2, with a gauge of 32 stitches by 34 rows over 4 inches when knitting the illusion pattern on larger needles in the round

The gauge specifications are particularly important for this project, as they directly affect how the optical illusion reads visually. The medium size is knitted to a slightly tighter gauge than the large size, demonstrating how gauge manipulation can achieve different finished dimensions without altering stitch counts.
