Product Description

The sky’s the limit! Don’t let a gate limit you. Open a gate and go, find new ways, knowledge, creativity! The mitts are worked in rib and cable pattern which makes them stretchy and ensures a snug fit for most hands. The simple to work 4x4 cable is made interesting and unusual by adding elongated stitches and strategically placed purl stitches. The cable pattern is charted and written. Separate instructions are given for the right hand, left hand and thumbs. Directions for three sizes are given. A natural fiber (merino, alpaca, lamb’s wool, etc.) yarn should be used, that will keep its shape. The sample was knit in Cascade Yarns Heritage, colourway Italian Plum, 33 g / 1.17 oz.

Open a Gate Knitted Gloves and Mittens by Arella Seaton Design

Project Overview

Open a Gate is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for stretchy, form-fitting mittens designed by Arella Seaton. The pattern combines functional rib and cable construction with creative stitch manipulation to produce mittens that accommodate most hand sizes. The design philosophy emphasizes creative freedom and exploration, encouraging knitters to expand their technical skills while producing wearable accessories.

What is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of knitted mittens with separate shaping for the right hand, left hand, and thumbs. Three different sizes are included in the pattern, allowing knitters to customize the fit. The mittens are designed to stretch significantly when worn, expanding from 9 cm (3½ inches) unstretched to 18 cm (7 inches when stretched), ensuring a snug and comfortable fit for various hand sizes.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The mittens feature a combination of ribbed and cable knit patterns that work together to create both elasticity and visual interest. The primary stitch pattern is a 4x4 cable, which is a straightforward cable crossing that becomes distinctive through the addition of elongated stitches and strategically positioned purl stitches. This technique elevates a simple cable pattern into something more complex and visually engaging.

  • Rib Pattern: Creates the stretchy foundation and ensures the mittens maintain their shape and fit
  • Cable Pattern: A 4x4 cable (crossing 4 stitches over 4 stitches) forms the primary decorative element
  • Elongated Stitches: Extended stitches are incorporated into the cable pattern to add textural variation
  • Purl Stitches: Deliberately placed purl stitches break up the cable pattern and enhance the overall design

The pattern provides both charted and written instructions for the cable pattern, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following directions. Separate, detailed instructions are given for constructing the right mitten, left mitten, and thumbs, ensuring proper shaping and fit for each component.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the appropriate thickness for mittens while maintaining the definition of cable and rib stitches. The pattern specifically recommends using natural fiber yarns such as merino, alpaca, or lamb's wool, as these materials hold their shape better than synthetic alternatives and provide superior warmth and comfort.

The sample mittens shown in the pattern were knitted using Cascade Yarns Heritage in the colorway Italian Plum, requiring 33 grams (1.17 ounces) of yarn. This reference yarn allows knitters to gauge the appropriate yardage and fiber characteristics needed for their own versions.

Required Notions and Tools

Beyond yarn and needles, the following supplies are necessary to complete this project:

  • Cable needle for executing cable crossings
  • Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points
  • Stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches during mitten construction
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing seams

Skill Level and Pattern Complexity

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including basic stitch work, increasing and decreasing, and familiarity with cable techniques. The combination of ribbing, cables, and the need to work separate shaping for left and right hands makes this an appropriate challenge for knitters moving beyond beginner projects. The inclusion of both charted and written instructions accommodates different learning preferences within the intermediate skill range.
