Oolong Cardigan by Laura Chau
What is Being Made
Oolong is a fingering weight cardigan designed as a lightweight adaptation of the popular Amelia cardigan pattern. This seamlessly constructed garment features a close-fitting silhouette with minimal ease (0-2 inches), making it versatile enough for both professional and casual wear. The cardigan works equally well dressed up with a skirt for office settings or paired casually with jeans for everyday styling.
Construction and Design Features
This cardigan is worked seamlessly from the bottom up using raglan sleeve construction, which creates smooth, integrated sleeve caps without the need for seaming. The design incorporates several tailored elements that contribute to its polished appearance and refined fit.
- Twisted rib panels: These structural elements evoke the appearance of pintucks, adding visual interest and definition to the garment while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic
- Deep garter stitch edgings: Applied throughout the cardigan for durability and a finished look
- Tailored side shaping: Carefully placed decreases and increases create a contoured silhouette
- Deep scoopneck: Provides an elegant neckline opening
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Oolong cardigan employs fundamental knitting techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters. Twisted ribbing forms the primary stitch pattern, creating the distinctive pintuck-like texture. Garter stitch is used for the edgings throughout the garment. Seamless raglan construction requires proficiency with circular needles and the ability to work in the round while managing shaping across multiple sections simultaneously. The tailored fit is achieved through strategic decreases and increases placed at side seams and raglan lines.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Oolong is designed for fingering weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and creates the lightweight, bouncy fabric characteristic of this design. The pattern was photographed in Koigu KPM, a 100% merino wool yarn offering 175 yards per 50-gram skein. Merino wool provides natural elasticity, breathability, and a soft hand ideal for close-fitting garments. The fingering weight classification ensures the finished cardigan drapes beautifully while maintaining structure through the twisted rib detailing.
Sizing and Fit Guidance
Oolong is offered in multiple sizes and is designed to be worn with minimal ease. Crafters should select their finished size based on high bust measurement rather than full bust, as the close fit is intentional to the design. This approach ensures the twisted rib panels and tailored shaping display as intended.
