In this tutorial, we’re going to learn how to do something very unique. We’re going to knit this sweater using undyed yarn, then dye it (as a completed garment) to get the Ombré effect. Ombré dyeing gives us a very light color at the top of the sweater, gradually getting darker toward the bottom.
Ombré-Dyed Sweater by Staci Perry
What is Being Made
The Ombré-Dyed Sweater is a knitted cardigan pattern designed by Staci Perry and available through verypink.com. This garment is crafted using fingering-weight yarn and features a gradient color effect achieved through ombré dyeing. The pattern offers seven size options ranging from XSmall to 3XLarge, accommodating actual chest measurements from 28 inches to 52 inches, with finished sweater measurements between 32 and 58.5 inches to allow for a casual, comfortable fit.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project utilizes fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance ideal for showcasing the ombré color gradient. The construction method involves circular or straight needles, allowing knitters to choose their preferred working style. Proper gauge measurement is emphasized as critical to the project's success, with special attention given to stitch gauge over row gauge when adjustments are needed.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch employed throughout this cardigan is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the sweater's structure and surface. This fundamental knit stitch creates the smooth, even texture that allows the ombré-dyed yarn colors to display prominently without visual distraction from complex stitch patterns.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ombré-Dyed Sweater pattern calls for Knit Picks Bare Stroll Fingering Sock Yarn, a 4-ply weight yarn available in 462-yard hanks. Yarn quantities vary by size: XSmall, Small, and Medium sizes require 3 hanks each, while Large and XLarge require 4 hanks, and 2XLarge and 3XLarge require 5 hanks. The fingering weight classification provides excellent stitch definition and drape for a fitted, elegant cardigan.
Needles: Size 6 US circular or straight needles are specified for this project. The choice between circular and straight needles allows knitters to work according to their personal preference and experience level.
Gauge: The pattern requires 5.5 stitches and 7.5 rows per inch when worked in stockinette stitch. Knitters are advised to measure gauge after washing and blocking their swatch to ensure accurate finished measurements, as this step accounts for yarn behavior after finishing.
Additional Materials
- Stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming
- Row counter for tracking progress through pattern rows
This intermediate cardigan pattern combines classic knitting fundamentals with the visual appeal of ombré-dyed yarn, making it an accessible project for knitters seeking to expand their skills while creating a wearable, gradient-colored garment.
