Product Description

This is a shrug-cardigan , loose and comfy very friendly for beginner crocheters! Its been a very long time now that I have been trying to write down the pattern for this! I have finished crocheting last month and since then I really wanted to lounge in it all day! I did not want to get out of it once I tried it on. After my Aspen Crochet Shrug I wanted to make a new one , a rectangle shape again so a new crocheter can make it and I was searching for a stitch that would resemble to granny stripes but yet not classic granny pattern. I made lots of swatches and I finally chose this block stitch which is one of the easiest you will ever come across, an effortless pattern to work even while watching your favorite TV shows.

Olivia Crochet Shrug by Mary Grasia

What Is Being Made

The Olivia Shrug is a versatile crochet garment designed as a simple rectangle that transforms into a wearable shrug through creative folding and wearing techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Mary Grasia offers a straightforward construction method suitable for crafters seeking an elegant layering piece. The shrug works for multiple age groups and adult sizes, ranging from children ages 6–8 years through adult 4XL.

Construction and Design Approach

Rather than complex shaping, the Olivia Shrug employs a rectangle-based construction method that simplifies the crochet process while delivering a fashionable finished garment. This approach makes the pattern accessible to intermediate-level crocheters who understand basic stitch techniques but may not be ready for intricate shaping or advanced garment construction. The rectangular foundation allows for optional striping details using contrasting yarn colors, adding visual interest without increasing difficulty.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

The pattern utilizes block stitches as its primary structural element, creating a textured, dimensional fabric. The gauge specification of 4 block stitches equaling 3.54 inches in width and 10 rows of pattern measuring 8.26 inches in length provides the foundation for accurate sizing across all garment dimensions. This stitch selection balances visual appeal with straightforward execution, making it ideal for intermediate crafters.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Crochet Hook: US size J/10 (6 mm)

Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is the primary material, offering durability and drape suitable for a shrug silhouette. The pattern accommodates both solid yarn and scrap yarn combinations for striped variations.

  • Children 6–8 years: 650 yards
  • Children 10–12 years: 800 yards
  • Teens 15–18 years: 1,000 yards
  • Adult Small: 1,300 yards
  • Adult Medium: 1,450 yards
  • Adult Large: 1,650 yards
  • Adult XL: 1,850 yards
  • Adult 2XL: 1,950 yards
  • Adult 3XL: 2,200 yards
  • Adult 4XL: 2,350 yards

Yarn Specifications

The designer used Lion Brand Vanna's Style in 100% acrylic, Shade 174 Olive, with each 100g skein providing 232 meters (254 yards). For optional striped detailing, the pattern calls for half-skein quantities in contrasting colors such as ecru and red, though any scrap yarns in complementary shades work equally well.

Finished Measurements

The rectangle dimensions vary by size to ensure proper fit across the age and size range:

  • Children 6–8 years: 23.62 inches wide × 21.25 inches long (60 cm × 54 cm)
  • Children 10–12 years: 28.74 inches wide × 25.19 inches long (73 cm × 64 cm)
  • Teens 15–18 years: 32.67 inches wide × 29.52 inches long (83 cm × 75 cm)

Difficulty Level

Classified as intermediate, this pattern assumes familiarity with fundamental crochet techniques and the ability to read pattern instructions, maintain consistent gauge, and execute block stitches accurately. The rectangle-based approach eliminates complex shaping, making it an excellent intermediate project that builds confidence without overwhelming detail work.

Pattern Format

The Olivia Shrug is available as a downloadable PDF, providing immediate access to the complete 10-page pattern document with detailed instructions, measurements, and materials lists for all sizes.
