Product Description

I like mittens with coloured patterns, and I love mittens that use interesting wrist techniques. So I had a lot of fun with this pattern. I created 5 sizes, which are variations of the same design: 3 sizes from baby to young child, and two adult sizes, small and large female hand.

Don’t be afraid if you have never knit that kind of cuff, I included tutorials for those techniques!

You will notice that the smaller version has no thumb… Not only is it useless at this age, it’s also very difficult to put on!

These mittens have two versions for the wrist: a version with a ribbed wrist, and a version without. The version with the ribs is a little more difficult to knit, but it brings a little warmth to the wrist that is not to be neglected during extreme cold.

The pattern includes a table with quantities needed for each colour and size, if you want to use leftovers to knit the mittens.

Suggested Yarn Quince and Co. Lark. A suggested substitute is below.

Oiselle Mittens by Maude L. Baril

What Is Being Made

Oiselle is a knitted mitten pattern designed by independent designer Maude L. Baril. The pattern features colorful patterned mittens available in five distinct sizes: Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult-Small, and Adult-Large. This versatile design accommodates growing hands from infancy through adulthood, making it suitable for creating mittens for the entire family.

Design Features and Sizing

The pattern includes thoughtful design considerations across its size range. The Baby size notably omits a thumb, as thumbs are impractical and difficult to work with for the smallest wearers. All other sizes include functional thumbs. Each size is a variation of the same core design, allowing knitters to become familiar with the pattern structure while adapting it to different hand measurements. Complete schematic information with precise sizing details is included at the end of the pattern to help knitters select the appropriate size before beginning.

Wrist Construction Options

Oiselle mittens offer two distinct wrist finishing techniques, giving knitters flexibility in their final design:

  • Ribbed Wrist Version: Features traditional ribbing at the wrist opening. This version requires slightly more advanced knitting skills but provides enhanced warmth and a snug fit around the wrist—a practical benefit during extreme cold weather conditions.
  • Non-Ribbed Wrist Version: A simpler alternative that eliminates the ribbed cuff, making this version more accessible for knitters seeking a straightforward construction.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Oiselle pattern incorporates interesting wrist techniques as a defining feature. The design emphasizes colorful patterned knitting, which typically involves stranded colorwork or jacquard techniques to create visual interest throughout the mitten. The ribbed wrist option employs classic ribbing stitches that alternate knit and purl stitches to create elasticity and texture. These techniques combine to create mittens that are both visually appealing and functionally warm.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Lark by Quince and Co., a worsted weight yarn. Each 50-gram skein provides 123 meters of yardage. Worsted weight yarn is a medium-weight option ideal for mittens, offering good stitch definition for colorwork patterns while maintaining appropriate fabric density for warmth. The specific yardage requirements vary by size and are detailed within the pattern documentation.

Difficulty Level

Oiselle is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. This classification reflects the colorwork patterning and optional ribbed wrist construction, which require solid foundational knitting skills. Knitters comfortable with basic mittens and ready to explore patterned colorwork will find this pattern appropriately challenging and rewarding.

Pattern Format

Oiselle is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access upon purchase. The pattern includes complete schematic information and sizing details to support successful project planning and execution.
