Off Set Granny Square Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Off Set Granny Square is a versatile crochet project designed by Jessie Rayot that creates a classic granny square motif with a modern twist. This pattern offers two finished size options—a smaller 6-inch square or a larger 12-inch square—making it suitable for various applications including blankets, afghans, cushion covers, or standalone decorative pieces. The offset design provides visual interest while maintaining the traditional granny square structure that crocheters of all levels appreciate.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an easy, beginner-friendly project, the Off Set Granny Square is an excellent choice for those new to crochet or looking to expand their stitch repertoire. The straightforward construction and use of fundamental crochet techniques make this pattern accessible without sacrificing visual appeal or design sophistication.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs classic crochet techniques centered around the foundational stitches and construction methods that define traditional granny square work. The design utilizes a combination of basic stitches worked in rounds to build the square from the center outward. The pattern offers flexibility with border options, allowing crafters to choose between a thin or thick border finish depending on their preference and desired final appearance. This customization feature adds versatility to the project while keeping the core construction method simple and manageable for beginners.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch) – Used to create the foundation and spaces within the pattern
  • Double crochet (dc) – The primary stitch forming the body of the square
  • Single crochet (sc) – Used for joining and finishing details
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – Applied to join rounds and create seamless transitions

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Off Set Granny Square pattern calls for Sprightly Yarns Acrylic Worsted weight yarn, which is a size 4 worsted weight composed of 100% acrylic fiber. This yarn choice offers durability, easy care, and vibrant color options. The pattern features five coordinated colors from the Sprightly Yarns collection: Sunshine Yellow 026 (Color A), Lagoon 010 (Color B), Grass 012 (Color C), Teal 001 (Color D), and Mulberry 022 (Color E). Each color skein provides 100 grams and approximately 201 yards of yarn, allowing crafters to work with a multi-color palette to create visual depth and interest in their finished square.

Tools and Gauge

The pattern requires a US-J/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for aran weight yarn and provides comfortable working tension for most crocheters. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches by 7 rows measured over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in double crochet stitch. Achieving proper gauge ensures that the finished squares will measure accurately to the specified dimensions and will work well when multiple squares are joined together for larger projects.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and hook, the pattern requires only a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling multiple squares if desired. This minimal supply list makes the project economical and straightforward to begin.

Pattern Format and Presentation

This downloadable PDF pattern from designer Jessie Rayot includes a full-color front page showcasing the finished project, followed by an ad-free, text-only pattern printed in black ink for easy reference during crafting. Additional photographs appear on the final pages to provide visual guidance. The format is designed for flexibility—crafters can choose to print selectively to conserve ink by omitting the color cover page or photo pages if preferred.
