Product Description
Oaked is inspired by the huge oak trees that shade the back of our old white farmhouse. They drop acorns continuously in the fall, and my two daughters go outside and collect the acorns to adorn the house. Thus, the house gets "Oaked", like a fine wine.
This hat is a quick-to knit beanie/slouch hybrid that will keep your ears warm while you enjoy the crisp fall weather!

Oaked Hat by Alicia Plummer
What is Being Made
Oaked is a downloadable knitting pattern for a hat designed by Alicia Plummer. This versatile design is available in multiple sizes to fit infants, children, teens, and adults, making it suitable for the entire family. The hat is worked seamlessly from the brim upward, creating a classic construction method that ensures a comfortable, well-fitted garment.
Size Range and Fit
The Oaked pattern accommodates a wide range of head sizes across different age groups:
- Infant sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-24 months
- Child through adult sizes: child, teen, adult, and large adult
- Head circumference measurements range from 12½ inches (31½ cm) for the smallest size to 23 inches (58½ cm) for the largest size
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Oaked pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance on the right side. The ribbed cuff at the brim provides stretch and structure, ensuring the hat stays securely in place.
The pattern incorporates cable techniques as a design element, adding visual interest and texture to the finished hat. Knitters will use a cable needle to create these decorative twisted stitches. The construction begins with a long tail cast on worked in rib, which creates an elastic edge that blends seamlessly with the ribbed cuff section of the hat.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Oaked pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that produces a fabric with good drape and definition. The gauge for this pattern is 11 stitches by 14 to 15 rows per 2 inches (5 cm) when worked in stockinette stitch using US size 6/4 mm needles.
Knitters will need the following needle sizes to complete this project:
- US size 4/3.5 mm circular needles in 20-inch (50 cm) length, or 16-inch (40 cm) for smaller sizes, used for the ribbed cuff section
- US size 6/4 mm circular needles in 20-inch (50 cm) length, or 16-inch (40 cm) for smaller sizes, used for the body of the hat
- US size 6/4 mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the crown shaping when the stitch count becomes too small for circular needles
Additional Notions and Tools
Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a few essential notions: a cable needle for working the cable stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and the beginning of round. The pattern specifies placement of markers at the beginning of round and additional markers distributed across the body section to help maintain pattern accuracy.
Pattern Structure
The hat is constructed using a seamless, in-the-round method, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a more professional finish. The pattern includes size-specific charts to guide knitters through the cable and stitch pattern sections, ensuring proper shaping for each size category. Knitters are directed to consult the appropriate chart based on their chosen size before beginning the project.
