Product Description

Inspired by the sunlit Californian oak forests, this shawl is lively and full of light. Lace and eyelets are reminiscent of the patterns created by sun rays coming through the leaves of oak trees.

The combination of vertical stripes and playful lace panels creates a modern piece that is simple to style and a treat to knit. Only 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn, knit at a loose gauge, are transformed in an airy and generously sized wrap.

The pattern contains charts, row-by-row instructions and detailed stitch counts. The design is symmetrical. Stripes from the first half of the shawl are mirrored in the second half, but worked in opposite colors. This design was created to highlight the beauty of combining two hand-dyed colorways. For each color, use 350-400yds / 320-365m of fingering weight yarn or mohair + fingering. The pattern would work great even if one of yarns is heavily variegated. Dive into your stash, pick any two colors and watch the pattern do its magic ♡

Oak Forest Shawl

What Is Being Made

The Oak Forest Shawl is an airy, generously sized wrap designed by Ksenia Naidyon of Life Is Cozy. Inspired by the sunlit Californian oak forests, this shawl captures the interplay of light and shadow created by sun rays filtering through oak tree leaves. The design combines vertical stripes with playful lace panels to create a modern, versatile piece that works as both a functional wrap and a stylish accessory.

Design Features and Inspiration

The shawl showcases lace and eyelets that are reminiscent of natural patterns found in nature. The combination of vertical stripes and lace panels creates visual interest while remaining simple to style with various outfits. The pattern is specifically designed to highlight the beauty of combining two hand-dyed colorways, and works exceptionally well even when one or both colors are heavily variegated. This flexibility makes it an excellent project for stash-busting with any two colors from your yarn collection.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive look:

  • Lace knitting: Eyelets and lace panels form the primary decorative elements, creating openwork sections that contribute to the airy quality of the finished shawl
  • Vertical stripes: Structured vertical stripe patterns run throughout the design, providing visual definition and modern aesthetic appeal
  • Loose gauge knitting: The pattern is worked at a deliberately loose gauge to maximize the airiness and drape of the finished piece
  • Cable construction: The sample shawl was knit on cable needles, allowing for the generous size and comfortable working experience

Yarn and Materials

The Oak Forest Shawl is an efficient project requiring only 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn, with each color requiring 350–400 yards (320–365 meters). The sample shawl was created using Knit Picks Hawthorne Fingering, a blend of 80% highland wool and 20% nylon, which provides durability and elasticity suitable for lace knitting.

The pattern calls for US 8 / 5mm needles (or the appropriate size needed to obtain gauge) on a long cable configuration. Knitters using alternative fingering weight yarns should select needle sizes that allow them to achieve the specified gauge, ensuring the shawl drapes and sizes correctly.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty

This pattern is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply fingering weight yarns, making it suitable for fine, delicate knitting. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the lace work and pattern complexity, making it an ideal project for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle openwork techniques and color work coordination.
