Nutmeg Sweater – Children's Hooded Cardigan Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman

The Nutmeg Sweater, pattern #945, is a children's hooded pullover sweater designed by Julie Turjoman and knitted in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash worsted weight yarn. Rated Beginner skill level, this cozy hoodie is engineered to carry kids comfortably from fall through spring, with generous positive ease built in to accommodate growth spurts and active, everyday wear. It is available as a downloadable PDF pattern.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a children's hooded sweater with a relaxed, comfortable silhouette. The pattern is sized to fit children from 1–2 years through 12–14 years, covering seven size options:

  • 1-2 yr, 2-4 yr, 4-6 yr, 6-8 yr, 8-10 yr, 10-12 yr, 12-14 yr

Finished chest measurements range from 20½" to 34¾", and the design is intended to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease, making it roomy enough for layering and active movement. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size 6-8 yr.

Techniques Used

This pattern combines several construction techniques that give knitters a well-rounded experience even at the beginner level:

  • Bottom-up construction – the sweater is begun at the lower edge and worked upward toward the shoulders, a classic and intuitive approach for beginners
  • Worked flat – certain sections, such as the body panels, are knitted back and forth in rows on circular needles
  • Worked in the round – sleeves and other tubular sections are knitted circularly to minimize seaming and create seamless tubes
  • Seamed finishing – the garment pieces are joined using seaming techniques, giving the finished sweater structure and a neat, professional appearance

The combination of flat and in-the-round knitting makes this an excellent pattern for beginners who want to practice both methods in a single, satisfying project.

Stitches Used

While the pattern is designed for beginners, it incorporates foundational knitting stitches that build core skills:

  • Knit and purl stitches – the essential building blocks of all knitted fabric
  • Ribbing – typically used at cuffs, hem, and hood edges for elasticity and a tidy finish
  • Stockinette stitch – the smooth, classic fabric used throughout the body and sleeves

Materials – Yarn

The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Valley Superwash, a worsted weight yarn made from 100% Extra Fine Merino Superwash Wool, sold in 50g / 97-yard skeins. Two colors are used:

  • Main Color (MC): Color 127 Burgundy – required in quantities of 4 (5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12) skeins depending on size
  • Contrast Color (CC): Color 200 Steel Gray1 skein across all sizes

Valley Superwash's Extra Fine Merino fiber content makes it exceptionally soft against children's skin, while the superwash treatment ensures the finished sweater is easy-care and machine washable – a practical and important feature for kids' garments. The worsted weight knits up quickly, making this an ideal project for knitters who want to see fast progress.

Materials – Needles and Notions

The pattern requires two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and ribbed edgings:

  • US size 8 (5.00 mm) circular needles in 16" and 32" lengths, plus double-pointed needles (DPNs) – used for the main body fabric
