Product Description
This oversize sweater is worked in pieces: back, front and two sleeves. The pieces are worked from the ribbed bottom edging up. The neckband is worked in the round from stitches picked up from the neck edge after the pieces are seamed. The sleeves are a modified dropped shoulder construction. The garment is intended to be worn with 25.5-40cm/10-15.75" positive ease. The model (size 81.5cm/32") is wearing size 2.
The Nubian Queen image in the front of the garment is knitted using the inatrsia colourwork method and worked from a chart.
The name, Nubian Queen, is used to describe a beautiful strong woman who is unapologetic about who she is. Nubian Queens come in all sizes and shapes and the the sweater is a celebration garment suitable for all women. Choose from bold colours or a more subtued pallette but be proud and unapologetic.
Nubian Queen Pullover by With Cherries on Top
Garment Overview
The Nubian Queen Pullover is a long, oversized sweater designed as a celebration garment featuring bold, unapologetic colorwork. Created by designer Sylvia Watts-Cherry, this intermediate-level knitting project showcases vibrant intarsia colourwork and is suitable for knitters with moderate experience seeking a striking statement piece.
Construction Method
This sweater is knitted in separate pieces rather than in the round, with construction beginning at the ribbed bottom edging and working upward. The garment consists of four main components: a back piece, a front piece, and two sleeves. This modular approach allows for easier management of the colorwork sections and straightforward seaming during finishing.
Colorwork Technique
The defining feature of the Nubian Queen Pullover is its use of the intarsia method for colorwork. Intarsia is a technique where different colored yarns are used to create distinct color blocks and patterns within the knitted fabric. Rather than carrying yarn across the back of the work as in stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate yarn bobbins for each color section, resulting in a single-thickness fabric with clean color transitions. Knitters follow a detailed chart to execute the intarsia pattern on the front piece, making this a more advanced colorwork undertaking than simpler techniques.
Stitches and Finishing
The pattern employs ribbed edging at the bottom of the sweater for structure and elasticity. The neckband is worked by picking up stitches directly from the neck opening, a common finishing technique that creates a neat, integrated neckline. This method eliminates the need for a separate neckband piece and ensures a professional appearance.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn Weight: Aran or Worsted weight yarn, which creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for oversized garments
- Needle Size: Appropriate to the chosen yarn weight (typically US 7-9 / 4.5-5.5mm for Aran and Worsted weights, though specific needle size should be confirmed in the pattern)
- Multiple Colors: The intarsia colorwork requires several yarn colors to achieve the bold, striking design
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Nubian Queen Pullover is best suited for knitters who have completed basic sweater projects and are comfortable with fundamental techniques. The intarsia colorwork adds complexity beyond simple stockinette stitch, requiring attention to chart reading and careful yarn management with bobbins. However, the piece-by-piece construction and straightforward stitch patterns make it accessible to dedicated intermediate-level crafters.
Design Philosophy
The Nubian Queen Pullover celebrates diversity and self-expression through its bold color palette and generous fit. The sweater is intentionally designed to flatter all body types and sizes, embodying confidence and strength through its unapologetic aesthetic.
