What is Being Made

This is a decorative guest towel featuring a Christmas lamp design, created through knitting. The finished towel measures 33 x 49 centimeters, making it an ideal size for guest use. Designed by Lotte Vilstrup Nielsen, this project is part of an advent challenge series and combines festive holiday aesthetics with practical household functionality.

Craft and Techniques

This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The design is suitable for beginner-level knitters, requiring only fundamental knitting knowledge and skills. The pattern uses a combination of basic knitting techniques including casting on, working in rows, and maintaining consistent tension throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

The towel employs two essential knitting stitches throughout its construction:

• Knit stitch (ret) – creates the smooth, raised texture on the front of the fabric
• Purl stitch (vrang) – produces the recessed texture and is used strategically to create the visual pattern of the Christmas lamp design

The pattern begins with a simple alternating knit and purl ribbing for the first four rows, establishing a stable edge. From row five onward, the stitches are arranged in specific sequences to form the lamp motif, with purl stitches creating darker areas and knit stitches forming lighter sections of the design. The pattern requires casting on 89 stitches and working in flat rows until the desired length is achieved.

Materials

The guest towel is crafted using 100% cotton yarn sourced from Hobbi garn, a quality yarn supplier. The yarn weight is 4-ply, providing a lightweight yet durable fabric suitable for towel applications. Two 50-gram balls of yarn are required, offering a total yardage of 170 meters. The project calls for size 3 knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for working with 4-ply cotton yarn. The cotton fiber ensures the finished towel is absorbent, soft, and practical for everyday guest use while maintaining the decorative Christmas lamp pattern.
