Product Description
An individual pattern from The Shetland Trader Book One, a collection of 10 patterns inspired by the Shetland Islands from designer Gudrun Johnston with photography by Jared Flood.
The hat is named for the Tammy Norie, as Shetlanders call the Puffin, and it's shown in Fiber Company Savannah (a DK weight yarn), shade “seafoam”.
Norie Slouchy Beanie by Gudrun Johnston
What Is Being Made
Norie is a slouchy beanie hat designed by Gudrun Johnston, inspired by the practical headwear needs of Shetland's notoriously windy climate. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a relaxed-fitting hat with a finished circumference of 17¼ inches (44 centimeters), designed to fit head sizes between 20–22 inches (51–56 centimeters). The slouchy silhouette provides both functional ear protection and a contemporary, relaxed aesthetic suitable for various seasons.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work
The Norie pattern combines two primary knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The main decorative element is the Cat's Paw Lace, a charming lace pattern that features motifs resembling small paw prints. This lace repeat works over 7 stitches and alternates between knit rounds and lace-working rounds that incorporate yarn overs and knit-two-together decreases to create the characteristic openwork design.
The Cat's Paw Lace is strategically accented with garter stitch ridges, which provide textural contrast and structural definition. Garter stitch—created by knitting every row in flat knitting or alternating knit and purl rounds in circular knitting—adds a subtle ribbed appearance and helps frame the delicate lace sections. This combination of lace and garter stitch creates a balanced design that is described as a quick knit with a wee bit of lace, making it accessible despite its advanced difficulty rating.
Knitting Needles and Construction Method
The Norie pattern is worked in the round using circular needle construction, which is the standard method for seamless hat knitting. The pattern requires:
- One US 5 (3.75mm) circular needle, 16 inches in length, for the main body of the hat
- One set of US 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles (dpns) for the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for the circular needle
This needle combination allows knitters to work continuously in rounds without seaming, creating a seamless, professional finish typical of modern hat design.
Yarn Requirements and Fiber Content
The Norie pattern calls for 260 yards of DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates fabric with excellent drape and definition for lace stitches. The sample shown was knitted in Fiber Company Savannah, a premium blended yarn containing 50% merino wool, 20% cotton, 15% linen, and 15% soya. This particular yarn comes in 160-yard skeins at a 50-gram weight, meaning approximately 1.6 skeins are needed for the project. The "seafoam" colorway shown in the pattern sample provides a soft, coastal aesthetic appropriate to the Shetland inspiration.
The fiber blend in Savannah offers breathability from the cotton and linen components while providing the elasticity and warmth of merino wool, with soya adding softness. Knitters may substitute any DK weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber characteristics to achieve comparable results.
Gauge and Sizing Adjustments
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies:
- Stockinette stitch gauge: 24 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) on US 5 (3.75mm) needles
- Garter stitch gauge: 21 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) on US 5 (3.75mm) needles
The difference in stitch gauge between stockinette and garter stitch reflects the natural compression that occurs when working garter stitch. Knitters should swatch both stitch patterns and adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge, ensuring the finished hat will fit properly and the lace pattern will have the intended appearance.
Additional Materials and Notions
Beyond needles and yarn, the Norie pattern requires minimal notions:
- A stitch marker for tracking the beginning of rounds
- A tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion
These basic tools are standard in most knitters' supplies and support the seamless, in-the-round construction method.
