Product Description

Make a realistic looking cow doll with this easy pattern.

Size: 6 inch / 15 cm sitting when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials: For this cow you'll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You'll need three colours of yarn: brown (1/4 of a 100 yard skein), light grey (1/4) and oatmeal (1/8). These quantities are estimates. For the eyes I've used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0867, 0054, 1419.

Noof the Cow Crochet Pattern by Son's Popkes

What is Being Made

Noof is a charming crocheted amigurumi-style cow toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a small, cuddly cow figure that measures approximately 6 inches (15 cm) when sitting. The finished toy is suitable for display, play, or gifting, and appeals to crafters seeking a manageable stuffed animal project with personality.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to construct the three-dimensional cow form:

  • Working in the round: The entire doll is constructed using spiral rounds, a technique that creates seamless cylindrical and spherical shapes ideal for amigurumi toys. Crafters are encouraged to use a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round and advance it as new rounds commence.
  • Color changes: The pattern incorporates intentional color transitions to create the cow's distinctive markings and features. Color changes are executed by switching yarn colors in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as the next round begins. The pattern provides color-coded instructions for complex color changes to simplify the process.
  • Stuffing and shaping: As a three-dimensional toy, the pattern involves strategic stuffing to achieve proper form and dimension throughout the construction process.

Stitches Used

While the pattern description does not enumerate every individual stitch, standard American crochet terminology is used throughout. Typical stitches found in amigurumi patterns of this style include single crochet for tight, dense fabric and increases and decreases for shaping the cow's body, head, legs, and other features.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Hooks

The pattern is designed to work with worsted weight yarn, offering a balanced thickness suitable for intermediate crocheters. The designer specifically recommends fuzzy yarn for optimal results, as the textured surface enhances the toy's tactile appeal and realistic cow appearance. The yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool fiber, which provides warmth, durability, and a naturally fuzzy finish.

The final size of the completed cow is dependent on both the yarn weight selected and individual crochet tension. Crafters using the recommended worsted weight yarn and following standard tension guidelines will achieve the intended 6-inch sitting height. A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn (typically size H/8 or I/9) is required, though the pattern does not specify an exact hook size, allowing flexibility based on personal tension and yarn choice.

Pattern Notes for Success

Crafters should read the entire pattern before beginning to understand the structure and color-change sequences. Experimentation with eye size is recommended, as the proportions may vary based on yarn weight and individual tension. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters familiar with this convention.
