Product Description

The Ninalika socks are worked from the toe up. I added a small gusset to the shadow-wrap heel for a wider instep.

The small stranded pattern is easy to knit (no long floats) and runs over a 4-stitch-repeat. Therefore the pattern can easily be adapted to other sizes.

The instructions have been written for magic looping but also DPNs can be used.

Ninalika Socks by Frl. Staedtisch

What Is Being Made

Ninalika Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for women's and men's sock designs offered in three size options. The pattern accommodates multiple foot sizes through graduated circumference measurements, ranging from European women's size 37–39 up to men's European size 45. This allows knitters to customize the fit for different wearers, making it a versatile project for both gift-giving and personal use.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides three distinct size options:

  • Small: 15.5 cm / 6″ circumference, fitting approximate foot circumference of 19 cm / 7.5"; women's EU 37–39 / US 6 ½–8 ½
  • Medium: 18 cm / 7″ circumference, fitting approximate foot circumference of 22 cm / 8.75"; women's EU 40–42 / US 9–10, men's EU 40–42 / US 7 ½–8 ½
  • Large: 20 cm / 8″ circumference, fitting approximate foot circumference of 25 cm / 9.75"; women's EU 43–45 / US 10 ½–13, men's EU 43–45 / US 9–11 ½

Knitting Techniques

Ninalika Socks employs the magic loop technique, a popular method for knitting small circumference projects in the round without requiring a full set of double-pointed needles. This technique uses a single circular needle with a flexible cable, allowing knitters to work both the front and back sections of the sock simultaneously. The pattern designates Needle 1 (N1) to hold stitches of the top of the foot and front of the leg, while Needle 2 (N2) holds stitches of the sole and back of the leg, creating a structured approach to sock construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used in Ninalika Socks is stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Stockinette stitch in circular knitting creates a smooth, uniform fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns of stitches on the right side, making it ideal for sock construction where durability and comfort are priorities. The pattern establishes a gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches in stockinette stitch in the round, which knitters should verify before beginning to ensure proper fit.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Ninalika Socks is designed for fingering weight sock yarn, a 3-ply yarn weight category that provides the appropriate thickness and elasticity for sock knitting. The pattern requires approximately 100 grams of main color yarn and 10 grams of contrast color yarn. The sample shown uses approximately 60 grams (252 meters / 276 yards) for the small size pair of socks in European size 39 / US 7 ½, providing a reference point for yardage planning across the size range.

Tools and Notions

The pattern calls for the following equipment:

  • Circular needle: 2 mm / US 0, sized appropriately for magic loop technique work
  • Tapestry needle: For weaving in yarn ends and finishing
  • Tape measure: For checking gauge and fit during construction

Difficulty Level

Ninalika Socks is classified as an intermediate difficulty project. This rating reflects the requirement for knitters to be comfortable with circular knitting techniques, specifically the magic loop method, as well as understanding gauge and basic sock construction principles. Knitters should have foundational skills in cast-on methods, knit and purl stitches, and yarn management before attempting this pattern.

Pattern Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including CO (cast on), EOR (end of round), and k (knit). Additional techniques referenced include casting on, working through the back loop, and joining stitches together, all standard elements of sock knitting construction.
