Necks Time Cowl by Neish Design
Project Overview
Necks Time is a downloadable knitting pattern for a conical cowl designed by neish design. This intermediate-level project combines classic cowl construction with modern colorwork techniques, making it an engaging pattern for knitters with some experience who want to explore multi-color stranded knitting.
What Is Being Made
Necks Time is a conical-shaped cowl, a versatile neckwear accessory that tapers gradually from a wider base to a narrower top. The distinctive cone shape is achieved through strategic decreases worked throughout the knitting process, creating a flattering garment that sits elegantly around the neck and shoulders.
Construction Method
The cowl is knit from the bottom up in the round, using circular needles to create a seamless tubular fabric. This construction method allows knitters to try on the garment as it grows and provides continuous visual feedback on the fit and shaping. The conical silhouette is created through gradual decreases that are distributed evenly throughout the pattern, ensuring a smooth taper rather than abrupt shaping changes.
Colorwork Technique
Necks Time features extensive stranded colorwork across ten distinct bands of color. Each band incorporates three contrast colors worked against a main color base, creating rich, multi-hued sections that build visual interest and depth. The colorwork bands are separated, allowing knitters to change their contrast color combinations between sections for creative customization.
All slip stitches within the colorwork are worked with the yarn held at the back of the work, a technique that keeps floats secure and maintains consistent tension across color changes. This method is particularly effective for stranded colorwork as it prevents loose floats on the public-facing side of the fabric.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the stockinette base
- Purl (p) – used selectively within colorwork bands to create texture variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – the primary decrease method for shaping the conical form
- Slip stitch (sl1) – worked with yarn held at back, used within colorwork sections to create pattern definition and color transitions
Colorwork Pattern Structure
The pattern provides detailed stitch charts on page 3 that map out the complete colorwork sequences. The repeating pattern within each band follows this structure:
- Round 1: Knit with Contrast Color 1, then break yarn
- Round 2: Knit with Contrast Color 2, then break yarn
- Round 3: Purl with Contrast Color 2, then break yarn
- Round 4: Slip 1, knit 1 alternating pattern with Contrast Color 3
- Round 5: Slip 1, purl 1 alternating pattern with Contrast Color 3
This five-round sequence creates textured, multi-colored bands that repeat across the ten color sections of the cowl.
Customization Options
The pattern acknowledges that yarn quantities are calculated specifically for the provided color combinations on page 3. Knitters who wish to deviate from the suggested contrast color pairings should be prepared to adjust yarn yardage accordingly, as different color placements may require varying amounts of each contrast color. To facilitate creative color experimentation, blank charts are provided on page 4 for knitters to plan and sketch their own custom contrast color combinations before beginning the project.
Materials Required
Necks Time is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight fingering or sport-weight yarn that creates delicate, refined colorwork and allows the stitch definition to shine. Circular needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn are required for working in the round. The pattern specifies exact yarn quantities for the main color and each of the three contrast colors used in the provided colorwork design.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques including knitting in the round, reading charts, and managing multiple yarn colors. The combination of decreasing shaping, stranded colorwork, and slip stitch techniques provides a satisfying challenge without being overwhelming for experienced knitters ready to expand their skills.
