Product Description

Intermediate difficulty: Most of the stitches are relatively simple but putting it all together probably needs some experience.

This a a useful bag an ideal size for carrying a small laptop. I designed it originally for my daughter so that she'd have something to carry her school laptop around in, I have found since though that it is a really handy size and shape for everyday use.

Created in panels which are then crocheted together it leaves you free to make your own modifications to get another size. The fabric is very firm as two strands of yarn are used together with a smaller hook size than usual so that there aren't any problems with the bag stretching over time. A great project for using up those partial balls of yarn you have hanging around in the stash. If you adjust your hook size accordingly you can make this out of any weight yarn, be aware that by doing this you will, of course, end up with a different sized bag.

What Is Being Made

Naya's Nifty Bag is a structured crochet handbag designed as an intermediate-level project. The finished bag measures approximately 35cm x 27cm, making it a practical everyday accessory. This downloadable crochet pattern is suitable for crafters with some experience looking to create a polished, wearable finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

The bag requires 250 to 300 metres of DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply). The pattern notes that worsted weight yarn can be substituted, though this will produce a larger finished size and may require adjusting hook size accordingly. The designer used approximately 150 metres of black yarn combined with small partial balls and skeins of other colours to create a multi-coloured design. It is essential that the same brand of yarn is used throughout the entire project to ensure that all panels measure correctly and fit together properly during assembly.

Additional materials needed include a 5mm crochet hook (or the size required to achieve correct tension), a yarn needle with a large eye for weaving in ends and seaming, and 2 large buttons for fastening.

Tension and Gauge

Correct tension is critical for the success of this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 11.5 stitches and 13 rows over 10 centimetres when working with a 5mm hook and two strands of DK weight yarn held together. Achieving the correct tension ensures that the finished bag will be the intended size and that all component panels will align properly during construction.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate crochet pattern employs several fundamental and slightly more advanced stitches to construct the bag. The stitch abbreviations used throughout the pattern include:

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of crochet fabric
  • Double crochet (dc) – a basic short stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
  • Treble (tr) – a taller stitch that adds height and texture to the fabric
  • Double treble (dtr) – an even taller stitch for creating more open or textured sections
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions

The pattern is written in UK and Australian crochet terminology, which differs from US terminology. Crafters should ensure they are familiar with these stitch definitions before beginning the project. The use of two strands of yarn held together while working creates a thicker, more substantial fabric suitable for a structured bag.

Pattern Structure

The bag is constructed from multiple panels that are worked separately and then assembled. The pattern includes standard crochet abbreviations and instructions for repeating stitch sequences (rep), working into spaces (sp), and yarn-over techniques (yoh). The structured panel-based construction method allows for precise shaping and a professional finished appearance.
