Product Description
Nath was named after one of my lovely test knitters, and designed in collaboration with Madelinetosh Yarn company, through their yarn support programme for indie designers. I feel honoured to be one of the testers of their beautiful Euro Sock yarn. This yarn is soft, durable and also flexible. I highly recommend it for your next sock projects!
In this pattern you can learn how to cast on using the beautiful, flexible and not-so-common Picot cast-on technique for 1x1 ribbing, how to work a neat ssk, and how to create the store-bought-like German short heel.
The socks are knitted from the cuff down to the toe.
Gauge
34.25 sts and 52 rnds = 10 cm / 4” over Stocking stitch. Gauge swatch worked on size 2.25 mm / US 1 needle, in the round.
Nath Socks by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou
What is Being Made
Nath socks are a pair of cuff-down socks designed by independent knitter Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou in collaboration with Madelinetosh Yarn company through their yarn support programme for indie designers. These socks feature a decorative leg with an eyelet and spiral pattern, a structured heel, and customizable toe length, making them suitable for various foot sizes and personal preferences.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Nath socks pattern teaches several key knitting techniques that elevate this project to intermediate difficulty level:
- Picot Cast-on: A beautiful, flexible, and less commonly used cast-on technique specifically worked for 1x1 ribbing to create an elegant and stretchy edge
- 1x1 Twisted Rib: Applied to the cuff section to provide elasticity and a refined appearance
- Eyelet and Spiral Pattern: Decorative stitch work that runs along the leg of the socks for visual interest
- German Short Rows: A heel construction method that creates a store-bought-like finish, worked in either Reverse Stocking stitch or Stocking stitch depending on knitter preference
- Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A decrease technique that is worked neatly throughout the pattern
- Cuff-Down Construction: Socks are knitted from the cuff downward to the toe, allowing for easy customization of toe length
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates fundamental sock knitting stitches including 1x1 ribbing, 1x1 Twisted Rib, Stocking stitch, Reverse Stocking stitch, and eyelet stitches as part of the decorative spiral pattern on the leg.
Materials
Nath socks are designed to be knitted with Madelinetosh Yarn's Euro Sock yarn, a 4-ply weight yarn that is soft, durable, and flexible—ideal qualities for sock knitting. The pattern requires appropriate sock needles for working with 4-ply yarn in the round. The designer highly recommends this yarn for sock projects due to its superior performance and feel.
