Mycelium Field Journal Wristlets by Meghan Jackson
What is Being Made
Mycelium is a pair of knitted wristlets designed as retro-inspired accessories. These wristlets are available in three sizes—small, medium, and large—with unstretched circumferences of 7, 8, and 9 inches (18, 20, and 23 centimeters) respectively, and measure 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) in length. The design combines luxury yarns with simple knitting techniques and decorative cross stitch embellishment to create elegant, functional hand coverings.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
These wristlets are constructed using circular knitting methods, offering flexibility in needle choice for the crafter. The pattern accommodates multiple needle options to suit different knitting preferences and skill levels. Knitters may use US #2 (2.75 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer worked using the magic loop technique, or alternatively US #2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs). The magic loop method allows for small circumference knitting on longer circular needles, while DPNs provide a traditional approach to working in the round on smaller projects.
The base construction relies on straightforward stitching that allows the luxury yarns to take center stage. Cross stitch embellishment is incorporated as a decorative element, adding visual interest and a vintage aesthetic to the finished pieces. This combination of simple knit construction with added needlework detail creates a charming, retro accessory.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the wristlet fabric. Stockinette creates a smooth, classic knit surface ideal for showcasing the qualities of luxury yarn. The pattern also incorporates cross stitch as a secondary embellishment technique, applied after the knitted base is complete to add decorative patterning and visual depth.
Materials and Yarn
The Mycelium wristlets call for two distinct luxury yarns from Malabrigo, each selected for specific qualities:
- Malabrigo Silkpaca for the primary construction: This yarn is composed of 70% baby alpaca and 30% silk, offering a blend of softness and subtle sheen. One skein is required, worked in the colorway Ravelry Red. The skein provides 420 yards (395 meters) of yarn at a weight of 50 grams (1.75 ounces).
- Malabrigo Lace for cross stitch embellishment: This 100% merino wool yarn is used in small quantities (oddments) for the decorative cross stitch work. Available colorways used include Dark Earth, Natural, Olive, and Sauteme. Each skein of Malabrigo Lace provides 470 yards (430 meters) at 50 grams (1.75 ounces).
Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking rounds during circular knitting and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and executing the cross stitch embellishment.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 36 rounds measured over a 4-inch (10 centimeter) square in stockinette stitch after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct wristlet circumference and ensuring the finished pieces fit as intended. Blocking the completed wristlets helps set the stitches and creates a polished, professional finish that showcases the luxury fiber content.
