My First Puppets: Mr Crocodile Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly crochet puppet pattern designed by Heather Gibbs from Keep Calm and Crochet On UK. The finished Mr Crocodile puppet measures approximately 8 inches (25 cm) from nose to cuff and is sized to fit little hands comfortably while also stretching to accommodate adult hands for shared playtime between children and adults. This makes it an ideal toy for interactive puppet play and imaginative storytelling.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners learning to build three-dimensional amigurumi-style toys. The construction involves working in rounds to create the puppet's body structure, with increases and decreases used to shape the crocodile form. Stuffing is incorporated as you work to create a soft, huggable toy that maintains its shape during play.

Stitches Used

  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) / Half Double Treble (htr): Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all three loops on hook
  • Double Crochet (dc) / Treble (tr): Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over, draw through two loops, yarn over and draw through remaining loops
  • Single Crochet (sc): Used for joining and finishing details

Materials Required

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply), with the following yardage breakdown:

  • 20 g of green DK yarn for the main crocodile body
  • 5 g of red DK yarn for accent details
  • 2 g of white DK yarn for eye details
  • Scraps of black DK yarn for eyes and mouth definition
  • One 4 mm crochet hook (US size G)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces
  • Stitch marker for tracking rounds
  • Small amount of toy stuffing to fill the puppet
  • Pins (optional) for positioning pieces before sewing

The pattern notes that it will work with other yarn weights, though the finished size and gauge will differ from the specifications provided. The gauge is approximately 5 double crochet or single crochet stitches per 1 inch (2.5 cm).

Pattern Notes

This is a downloadable PDF pattern for personal use only and is not intended for resale. The pattern was designed in 2013 and represents an accessible entry point into toy crochet for beginners ready to move beyond basic practice swatches into a finished, three-dimensional project.
